Sponsors for 4-H Fair

Each year we look for additional award sponsors for the 4-H Fair. The sponsors could be anyone–an individual, a club, an organization, a business, etc. If you know of anyone or have suggestions of sponsors, please let us know. We appreciate your help.

ALL tickets must be turned in to the raffle booth in the 4-H Building (building 4) at the fairgrounds by 12 p.m., Sunday, August 21.

Record Finish Up

Fashion Revue Description

Fashion Revue is an opportunity for members in Clothing, Clothing Decisions, and Sewing 4 Fun to model their creations. Modeling tips and information are available at Clothing Judging on July 21 at Forest City Baptist Church.

Modeling practice will begin at 4 p.m. at Cherry Vale Mall on July 21. The fashion show begins at 6 p.m. with models lining up at 5:30 p.m.

We hope to wrap up and have you on your way home by 7:30 p.m. on July 21.

THIS YEAR FASHION REVUE IS BEING JUDGED AT STATE FAIR!

Clothing Judging & Fashion Revue

Clothing & Textiles members will have their garments and knitting & crocheting judged on Thursday, July 21 at Forest City Baptist Church, 4241 Pepper Dr., Rockford. Each club will be assigned a time to come for judging. If there is a very good reason you cannot be there at that time, call the Extension office. If you cannot come at all that day, you can ask another 4-H member or leader to take your garment to be judged. Bring your garment to the church, and change into it for judging. All Clothing members should follow signs to the check-in area. Please remember to bring all your accessories, hair ribbons, socks, jewelry, etc. and after judging, change back into the outfit you wore from home. Make sure you don't leave anything behind! Garments will be judged again at Cherry Vale. You will receive special instructions that day for the Cherry Vale Judging.

Call-backs from Clothing II & III will be checked in at 3:30 p.m. at Cherry Vale for final judging on hangers. Location for check-in and judging will be announced at Clothing Judging.

Everyone modeling in the Fashion Revue will need to be dressed and ready to line up at Cherry Vale by 5:30 p.m. You will model on stage.

Judges will make final decisions on clothing awards in construction and Fashion Revue, and will select state fair delegates and alternates. Award winners will be introduced on stage and trophies will be handed out. We usually finish up about 7:30 p.m. or so.

Livestock Exhibitors Info

We have had problems in the past with 4-H'ers miscalculating their pen space needs as well as failing to inform 4-H leaders or superintendents that they have decided not to show their animal(s).

Please request only what you need and, if you decide not to show, contact your Club Leader as soon as possible so they can relay it to the superintendents.

Also, a reminder to be sure to read over the NEW 4-H Show and Health Regulations in your NEW 4-H Program Book before bringing livestock to the 4-H Show. Also, be aware of maximum and minimum weights for the 4-H Show, both live and carcass classes, and sale weights at the 4-H Quality Sale.

In addition, please note that if you were in 4-H last year and did not achieve, you will not be allowed to sell in either Livestock or Fur & Feather Sale.

Club Banner Contest

Clubs are invited to create banners, which will be judged at Fashion Revue at Cherryvale Mall on Thursday, July 21. Please keep this in mind and get started early. If you have questions, feel free to call Tracy at 986-4357.

2005 Theme:"4-H TAKES YOU PLACES"

What Is 4-H About?

As we are about to enter into 4-H Show season we'd like to remind all of you what the 4-H program is really about. It isn't about trophies or ribbons; it's about learning life skills.

4-H'ers can learn things like setting goals, taking action on something, new skills, how to play fair, when to ask for help, how to utilize resources, ways to develop relationships in the community, and how to learn from others' input. It's so important that we take the 4-H opportunity to help our youth learn what they can for the future.

Learning things like how to be angry if you didn't get a trophy or the champion ribbon is NOT what we want our youth to learn. Let's teach our 4-H'ers good sportsmanship and how to be thankful for the opportunities that they have. What a great chance we have to teach today's youth!

4-H can be a very rewarding experience even if a 4-H'er doesn't win the top prize! Let's all team up together to help 4- H'ers learn why they are a part of the nation's largest and finest youth program!

Attention 4-H Members!

On Friday, August 5 at Non-livestock judging, if you have five or more projects you must check in by 2 p.m. regardless of your scheduled club time. THANKS!

County Premium Info

Just a reminder.....This year there will be no premiums paid for projects that are listed as "county projects". These are projects that have no State Fair opportunity. If you have questions call the Extension Office at 986-4357.

4-H Restaurant

To all the 4-H'ers, parents and volunteers that made last year a great success THANK YOU for all your help. Let's do it again this year!

We need volunteers to keep the 4-H Restaurant going. Club schedules will be coming out soon. As in the past, we need each club to take a turn staffing the Restaurant and donating pies and vegetables. If your assigned day does not work for you, you may switch with another club by contacting their leader. You MUST notify the Extension Office of any changes made when the worker lists are returned by Aug. 1st.

We also need one or 2 persons from each club to work and to CLEAN UP the restaurant, which is located in Moss Hall on the fairgrounds. Bring rags, buckets, paper towels, cleaning supplies, etc. Each club must turn their workers names into the 4-H Office no later than Aug. 1.

Also if your club would like to display its past banner in the Restaurant this year please call the Extension Office at 986-4357. It's a great chance to show off your club's work and to help brighten the 4-H Restaurant.

4-H Livestock Sale

If you have never been to the 4-H Livestock Auction, you may want to stop by the Dairy Arena on Saturday August 20 to enjoy the Fur & Feather Sale at 10:30 a.m. that morning. Then have a tasty lunch at the 4-H Restaurant to support our kids. Come back at 1 p.m. for the Livestock Auction excitement!

STATE FAIR & YOUR CHILD

We want all our families prepared in case your child(ren) are selected to go to State Fair. The basic requirements are that the child must be at least 10 years old as of Sept. 1 and receive an "A" rating on their project. Judges are able to select a certain number of entries to go to state. This number varies by project. In Visual Arts there is also a requirement that the entry be an original design, except for Heritage Arts. State Fair delegates are selected on Friday, August 5 at the fairgrounds during the judging of Non-livestock projects. (Delegates in Public Presentation, Foods Demo, Clothing & Fashion Revue are selected at those individual competitions prior to county fair.)

Delegates are notified by phone on Friday and Saturday. They must decide if they will be participating in State Fair, and, if selected in more than one project in each category, they must decide which one in each category they will enter. 4-H'ers may do one static and one action exhibit. A prompt decision is necessary so alternates may be contacted. If you have any questions about this procedure, please call Tracy at the office, 986-4357. It is a real scramble to contact some 60 kids in one day and get a response, so there are times kids may miss this opportunity simply because we can't get in touch with them. If you have any idea that your child may have been selected, please feel free to call us at the Extension Office on Saturday, August 6. This year 4-H'ers must sign a liability waiver for projects being transported to State Fair. Projects will be transported to and from State Fair by Extension Staff or appointed volunteers. Look for details as they become available. Be sure to read all rules in your Program Book regarding project requirements for State Fair! Hope this information helps you understand what to expect at fair time. Thanks for your patience.

Helping Leaders be 4-H Savy

PREPARING FOR 4-H FAIR/SHOW EXHIBITS:

4-H Fairs or shows are often the highlight of the 4-H year. From a youth development perspective, fairs allow 4-H members to display projects and to participate in educational experiences critiqued by an adult expert. Shows provide opportunities for 4-H members to demonstrate new knowledge, abilities, skills and attitudes. Fairs provide a showcase for recognition of youth and allow an avenue for youth people to practice the life skills of teamwork, cooperation, communication, sportsmanship and club pride and unity.

Youth Responsibilities:

4-H members need to establish a time line to work on their 4-H projects. They should set realistic goals on what they want to accomplish and set realistic completion dates. Be sure to read the rules and regulations outlined in the 4-H section of the fair book as well as the 4-H "fair" newsletter. Pay close attention to deadlines and specific requirements for each project. It may be helpful to highlight the wording in the fair book for each project in which members are enrolled. 4-H members need to do their own project work and complete it in the current year. Members will want to refer to the conference judging materials that are available on the 4-H web site (www.4-H.uiuc.edu/staff/fieldstaff.html) under Enrollment and Fair ~ Judging - Conference Judging Fact Sheets or obtain these fact sheets from their local Extension office. By reviewing these written materials, members may become more comfortable with discussing their projects with the judge. Judging score sheets for individual projects should also be available.

Parent Responsibilities:

Parents are encouraged to help 4-H members obtain the materials and resources needed to complete 4-H projects. Adults may answer questions, demonstrate skills, and offer guidance on project work but should not do the work themselves! Parents need to be familiar with the exhibit guidelines and judging schedules so they can help members be ready and on time for the various judging events. Adults can offer encouragement as young people prepare for conference judging and can provide support and reflection as youth complete the judging experience. Some counties offer parent meetings to help families become familiar with the "fair experience." Take advantage of these sessions!

Volunteer Responsibilities:

4-H leaders are a valuable asset when assisting members in their fair preparations. Volunteers are the link between the Extension office and the families. Be sure that 4-H families have the materials they need (project manuals, fair book, entry forms, and newsletter) to adequately prepare. Fair superintendents, 4-H curriculum committee members, project leaders, and older youth enrolled to similar projects can also answer questions and help members prepare their exhibits.

Club Responsibilities:

Clubs are encouraged to conduct a meeting where projects that are going to be exhibited at the fair are brought in and a mock judging occurs. This allows the members to practice the "question and answer" period of conference judging and provides adults with the opportunity to offer "last minute" suggestions for finalizing projects before the fair. Invite parents to attend along with the members and use this meeting as an opportunity to provide feedback and recognition to individual members and to promote club unity and pride.

4-H exhibits at a fair or show are designed to showcase the work of young people to others in the community. It provides young people with the opportunity to demonstrate skills and knowledge as well as to gain ideas for improvement. 4-H members are encouraged to try something more challenging each year and to practice good sportsmanship. Exhibiting is designed to be an enjoyable educational experience not just a contest. Enjoy the fair experience!
