Several years ago while visiting the south; I was impressed with these decorative plants. In that climate these plants make gorgeous trees.

Their flowering display; along with their decorative trunks make them a plant to consider in any landscape.

Today one can purchase crape myrtle plants that are dwarf around 3 feet to those which make 25 feet small trees in our area. The long flowering period of these plants will excite any gardener.

Crape myrtle is the common name for these plants. They are in the Lythracae family.

These plants like full sun and well drained soil. We are on their northern edge but my plants have done well here.

These plants seem to be loved by aphids which due to their excrement will create mold. One can control these pests using a soapy water solution. ` I have never had to spray mine.

Newer varieties have been developed for today's landscape which are smaller and disease resistant. There are upright and spreading varieties available.

I prefer my crape myrtle to be multi-trunked. Today you can also purchase single trunked plants. The choice is yours.

Color is also an option with white, purple, pink and red. These plants love hot weather and strive in it. Be sure when selecting a plant you remember we are in Zone 6.

So if your landscape needs a showy, flowering plant; get out and pick up a crape myrtle.
