I really can't remember when I started helping my mother in the garden. But I can tell you there is something that draws my spirit to the garden every year. I truly enjoy getting my hands dirty and watching things grow.
Why not introduce gardening to your children or grandchildren. Teach them the joy of watching plants grow and the responsibility of caring for them.
Start by buying them some seeds or some plants give them a pot or mark off a spot in the garden for them to call their own. Help them plant their seeds or plants in that location. The lesson of responsibility continues throughout the summer with watering, observing and basic nurturing of the plants.
A tool kit which includes a trowel or soil rake made to their size will give them some tools to use and care for. A small pair of gloves will help keep their hands clean. I personally like to get my hands dirty but some children as well as adults don't. Finally a bucket to store all this in so it is somewhat organized and easily moved from garden to storage will help.
A small watering can could be available for them to use. A label could be made from the seed packet taped to a popsicle stick. This shows them what to expect from their planting.
The story of you sharing time with them will always be in their heart. That is the part of gardening I remember. The time shared with my mother, grandfather and aunt in their gardens are memories which warm my heart every spring and summer. Whether I am working in the flower or vegetable garden there are memories for me to draw from.
You too can start memories for those special children in your life that will last forever. Introduce them to gardening they will cherish the memories always. There is just something about watching plants grow. Make those memories today.
