Apples

Sheila thought this would make a good topic to write about. She wanted to know about storing fruit.

Let's start by saying quality fruit comes from careful handling, prompt cooling and proper storage.

Apples, pears and grapes may be stored for extended periods of time. Other fruits should only be stored for short periods.

Apples should be stored in a perforated plastic bag in a refrigerator at or near 35˚F to retain flavor and quality. With proper storage apples will last several months in storage. There are varieties such as Arkansas Black known for its extended storage quality.

Pears like apples will store well in the refrigerator under the conditions mentioned for apples.

Grapes unlike most small fruit will store for several weeks if stored in a cool ventilated place.

Grapes are known for absorbing other odors so store them carefully in the crisper.

Strawberries, blackberries and blueberries are best if used immediately; although they can be kept for a few days. Extended storage with these fruits is best if they are processed and preserved by freezing or canning.

Cherries need to be ripe when picked. Cherries will not ripen off the tree. Cherries which are going to be stored for a few days should be harvested with the stems attached. Cherries with stems attached will keep longer.

Fruit can be stored but stage of maturity will affect quality and freshness. So pick fruit carefully and store it properly the results will be flavorful I promise.
