Carol thought growing amaryllis indoors would make a good topic. The great thing about Amaryllis is the ease of making them bloom and caring for them. This flower comes in many different colors solid, striped or multi-colored. Indoors these plants are sun loving and require at least 4 hours of direct sunlight daily.
So let's start our plant indoors. After flowering all old flowers should be removed and as the stem sags cut it back to just above the top of the bulb. Continue to allow the plant to grow and develop as the plant's leaves turn yellow. Usually this time of year cut the leaves back to within 2 inches of the bulb. Take the bulb from the soil and store in the refrigerator or in a cool location for at least 6 weeks.
Bulbs should be replanted about 8-9 weeks before you want them to flower. Bulbs should be planted in pots two inches larger than the bulb. A well-drained soil medium should be used such as equal parts perlite and peat moss. Keep the newly planted bulb moist until flowering. Water once per week keeping the surface moistened but not wet. Fertilize the bulb as leaves develop with a water-soluble fertilizer at least every other week.
With a little care one can enjoy Amaryllis indoors. This gorgeous bell shaped flower makes an excellent potted plant.
