Andy asks me to share my opinion about some native lawn trees.
Let's start with a "river birch" Betula nigra these trees are not bothered by the borer that attacks white birch. They make great clump plantings and will survive in wet soil conditions. I love their papery bark.
The "sugar maple" or sometimes called "hard maple" Acer saccharum Marsh. this tree is a slow growing tree with brilliant yellow fall color. These trees are the ones who can survive ice storms and provide decades of great shade. If you are into syrup making, this tree is definitely on your list.
"Black gum" also called the "Black Tupelo" Nyssa sylvatica Marsh. is a very attractive shade tree. I like the brilliant red fall color of its leaves. This tree does bear fruit in the fall and birds love it. So plant it in a corner away from the sidewalk. The glossy foliage is attractive to me during the summer as well.
White and Green ash trees have always been one of my favorites. However the threat of emerald ash borer is serious and these trees will have to go on my not to plant list.
Sassafras "Sassafras aldidum" is an aromatic tree with variously shaped leaves. This fast growing tree is somewhat brittle in wind and ice. Its diverse leaf color in the fall of yellow, orange or red is very attractive. It does produce fruit and is eaten by birds in the fall. The fruit is not messy. The tree needs little pruning to direct its growth.
Theses native trees are common throughout southern Illinois.
This list is only some of my favorites. Each homeowner will have to decide what trees they will plant into their landscape. It is a good thing there are many because we are all different. But one thing for sure trees add value to your home. They add beauty, protect you from harsh winds in the winter, protect you from hot sun rays in the summer and invite wildlife to enjoy their branches.
Add some trees to your lawn; you will be surprised at their benefits.
