As most of you know, Jeanetta Thompson is the leader of the "Young of Hearts Activists HCE Unit". This Unit meets on the first Thursday afternoon of each month at the Friendship Manor Nursing Home in Nashville. She has regular help and each unit is assigned a month to assist, this helps very much. Jeanetta has approximately 16 regular members and they are making scrap books.
The ladies love making these books and Jeanetta wouldn't have it any other way. She is not complaining, far from it, but it is expensive and she is paying almost all of the expenses out of her own pocket. It is a joy for Jeanetta to work with these ladies and see the improvement in hand movement and other motor skills.
The HCE Board has been discussing how we could assist her with the expenses. I asked her for a list of items that could be purchased. We have decided to do an ingather of items at the Christmas Special. Below is a list and this could be added to by the time of the Christmas Special.
Suggested items to be donated for the "Young at Heart HCE Unit" at Friendship Manor:
Scotch brand photo splits (1000 per box)
Pop dots
Glue dots - small and large
Scrap Book Factory - Pioneer square glue
sticks - would like to have 4 or more. Would really be nice to have one for each member (16). Approximately, $3 or $4 each.
Creative Memories – 8 1/2 X 11 white
scrapbook pages - they come in a package of 15 for approximately $15.
Creative Memories – 8 1/2 X 11 page
protectors - they come in a package of 15 for approximately $7.

Ways and Means
I can't believe that summer is almost over, school is ready to begin and our schedules for fall are filling up. We are all so busy, but as always, your response to fund raising this year has been overwhelming.
I am asking each unit to be responsible for scheduling at least one event to sell tickets plus schedule 2 people for one 2 hour shift, either Friday or Saturday at the Fall Festival in Nashville.
September 25 & 26 Volunteers please just one two hour shift Friday or Saturday Call me if you are available. (243-1173) We filled all the time slots last year and hope to do it again this year. We have the front of Lee's from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. I'm sure that the Fall Festival will again be a big success. It's always nice to spend a couple of hours outside enjoying the wonderful weather selling raffle tickets and visiting with your friends at the festival. We are there each year and your response to filling the time slots has been great.
Still looking for suggestions of locations and times to set up and sell raffle tickets and ideas for additional ways to raise funds.
Thanks for all you wonderful help and cooperation. This is a great group of ladies to work with.
Update: Still no knot.

Hopefully, each and every one of you are enjoying the cool days this summer. Some predictions are for warmer weather for August. However, this is summer and the crops do need the warmer weather for maturing. So, maybe summer will be summer in August.
Now, it is time to be also thinking about fall. Although most units don't collect Pennies for Friendship until September and October, that time will soon be here. Last year, we collected a total of $245.00. Let's work to collect that amount this year.

We have had great, nice cool weather in July – it's hard to believe that summer is ending and now we're in the month of August and school will be starting. Watch for the children as they go to school. Remember the students going to college with a care package of healthy snacks and of course, some homemade cookies!
Bernice Engelmann and I attended the National Volunteer Outreach Network (NVON) 11th Annual Conference at Our Lady of the Snows Shrine at Belleville, Illinois on July 15th. It was very interesting and an informative meeting. The Illinois HCE members hosted the conference with eight states represented, including 77 members from Illinois as 200 registered for the three-day conference.
Marilyn Daughheter, Illinois IAHCE President, reported on the volunteer hours and donations. Ruth Ann Andersen, President of NVON, opened the business meeting.
Louise Nichols, USA President of Associated Women of World (ACWW) entertained us with her experiences as she traveled through the world. $1600 was collected in the silent auction. Since we only went Wednesday, the last day of the conference, our gift basket was given as an attendance prize, going to an Illinois member.
The county HCE officers will attend the District Workshop in Mt. Vernon on August 18th. Since there will NOT be a county committee workshop, the county officers will contact the unit officers of new ideas.
Craft camp will be held September 15-17 at DuBois, Illinois. The theme of camp is "Herbs." Treasa Brookman will present the program "How to Make Herbal Vinegar." There will be a variety of crafts including quilling, shuttle tatting, jewelry making, stain glass mosaics, baskets, gourd crafts, bottle painting, etc. So for a day of fellowship and crafts, don't' forget to sign up at the Extension office.
Plans are being made for HCE Week October 4-10. The international program on the country of Argentina will be October 5th at St. Paul Parish Hall in Nashville. In Memory of Marion Reis, Past State President - January 27, 1931 – July 2, 2009
Helpful Hints
Slice lemons and limes and freeze them in ice cube trays with water. Serve with drinks for festive and refreshing drinks.
To decorate cupcakes with sprinkles or chips, place the sprinkles, chips, etc. in a coffee filter and dip the cupcake into the filter to decorate them. Then funnel leftovers into containers when done.

The Statue in the Mountains – In 1902 Argentina and Chile came close to going to war over their border. People in both countries urged their governments to find a peaceful way to solve the conflict. The two countries agreed and let the U.S. Ambassador and the British king decide on the border.
Argentines and Chileans accepted their decision peaceably. To commemorate this in 1904 a huge statue of Jesus called Christ of the Andes was erected at 13,000 feet (4,000 meters) on the border between the two nations.
The Andes are the world's second highest mountain range trailing only the Himalays in Asia.
The Argentine Flag – The flag has three equal horizontal bands, light blue on the top and bottom and white in between. On the center of the white band is the Sun of May, a radiant yellow sun with a human face. Argentines celebrate Flag Day on June 20, the day on which the designer of Argentina's flag, Manuel Belgrano, died.
National Symbols – The national flower is actually a tree, the ceibo. It has clusters of gorgeous red blossoms. The national stone is lnca rose or rhudochrosite, a pink stone with white streaks. The national animal is the ovenbird. It's name comes from the shape of its nest.

Community Outreach
Project Linus of Washington County will have a work session on August 13 at Nashville Grace United Methodist Church from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come and make new blankets for sick and traumatized children. Participants are asked to bring a brown bag lunch. A microwave is available. If you know of any family that has children who have lost their home or been traumatized in any way, contact Mary Barrett at 327.9821. Donations of supplies and money are welcomed.
During the months of June and July, a blanket went to the little girl in Okawville who was injured, three blankets went to Renner and Sons Funeral Home to three Schaefer children whose father was killed in Iraq, one blanket went to the Moss Funeral Home to a little girl whose father SSgt. Joshua Melton was killed in Afghanistan. Washington County Hospital Emergency Room received 30 blankets and two blankets went to the children of the Diecker family that lost their home to a fire.
At this time, we are in need of embroidery thread (any color), sewing machine needles, sewing needles and scissors.
Project Linus will be meeting in September, October and November. We will not meet in December.
