Illinois 4-H Dairy Teams Selected
The 2008 Illinois 4-H Invitational Dairy Cattle Judging Contest was held August 16 at the Illinois State Fair. Four-H members, 14 years and older who received an "A" rating at the State 4-H Dairy Judging Contest in June, were invited back to participate in the Illinois 4-H Invitational Dairy Judging Contest. Results from this contest, ability to present oral reasons, and judging results from the June contest were used to determine the four individuals that will represent Illinois 4-H in the 2008 National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin on September 29th.
Team members selected to represent Illinois at the 2008 National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin include: Stephanie Aves, Poplar Grove; Kristi Frederking, Nashville; Nick Harre, Nashville; and Amy Schaufelberger of Greenville, Illinois. 1st alternate: Grace Shanks, Garden Prairie and 2nd alternate: Aaron Mitchell of Winnebago, IL.
Team members selected to represent Illinois at the 2008 National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl and NAILE Dairy Judging contest in Louisville, KY this November are: Angie Boesche, DeKalb; Haley Lyons, Rockford; Elizabeth Myelle, Scales Mound; and Colleen Ziller of Huntley, IL.

. 4-H Achievement Night date will be October 28 and leaders will receive more information at the fall meeting.
Award Applications
Leaders, the award applications sent to you are for 4-H'ers to apply for awards in specific project areas. The project areas are the same as the headings in Section V of the permanent record where the 4-H members list their projects taken this year. These application forms are reproducible. Call the Extension office if you need copies or you can copy them yourself. Please encourage your 4-H'ers to complete at least one award application. These applications are used to award medals and blue awards.
Leaders' Meeting
Our fall leaders' meeting is scheduled for September 23rd, 7:30 p.m. at the Extension office. This meeting is one where 4-H leaders and volunteers help to plan events, workshops, activities for 4-H members and clubs. We also make part of the program to fit with the state 4-H focus. For 2008-09 we will work on some of the mission mandates from the August newsletter, particularly the Illinois Leader section. We will also give information concerning risk management strategies for clubs.
4-H contact leaders will receive more information in the next few weeks. We always welcome volunteers with new ideas at this meeting, and hopefully, we have representation from all our clubs, so we can plan county-wide events.
Federation
The 4-H Federation is looking for help. They are needing help to have fun, develop bonds with other 4-H members, create county activities for our 4-H'ers, do community service projects, and just be involved with a group of excellent young people.
The Washington County 4-H Federation meets the third Tuesday of the month at the Extension office. Federation is open to 4-H'ers entering 8th grade this fall or older. They will re-organize on September 16, 8 p.m. at the Extension office. Any questions, give us a call.
National 4-H Week
-H Week is October 5-11. You can use the theme on the promotional flyer A New 4-H Focus Means – New Opportunities for Washington County 4-H or the national theme which is Keeping It Green, or a combination of both. Clubs with posters to turn in should do so by October 3. Clubs, please take the time to make a display in your area. This is our best way to promote 4-H to our youth countywide. Inform the office of your display by October 1st.
Guidelines for window and table displays are:
· Let office know where your window or table display is located.
· We are hoping clubs would do a table display at a school in the club's community.
· Have in the display the name of a leader
potential members can contact.
· Leader's phone number.
· Place and time of 4-H meetings.
· Club name.
Windows and displays are judged on:
· Following the theme.
· Arrangement, layout, use of space in window.
· Readability.
· Use of color and point of interest
(audience approval).
4-H Week activity forms will be mailed to 4-H leaders in mid-September.
