Summer Volunteer Opportunities

Do you love working with school age children K-5th grade?
Do you love working with youth 8-12 years old?
Do you love to spend the summer doing outdoor activities?
Do you enjoy gardening?

If you answered yes to any of the previous questions and would like to gain some volunteer hours, we have a rewarding experience for you!

-The Fun, Food, and Friends Summer Camp is a summer day camp experience for youth, ages 5 and up conducted by the Danville Public Library in conjunction with University of Illinois Extension in Vermilion County. The participants will take part in 3 different projects: reading, life skills, and recreational activity. In addition, a snack will be provided. The Fun, Food, and Friends Summer Camp takes place every Thursday from June 12 through August 14, 2008 from 1:00 to 3:30 PM at the Danville Public Library.

-The Park Play Summer Program is organized by the City of Danville. The University of Illinois Extension will provide nutrition education and games with the children. The Play Park Program takes place every Tuesday and Thursday from June 10 through August 12, 2008 from 1:30 to 3:30 PM at Elmwood Park in Danville. Children participating in this program are 5 to 13 years old.

-The Boys & Girls Garden Club is a program organized by the Boys & Girls Club. The University of Illinois Extension Office will provide nutrition education and gardening activities with the children. The Boys & Girls Garden Club takes place every Monday and Wednesday from June 16 through August 13 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 Am at Garfield Park in Danville. The children participating are ages 5 through 12.

-Gardening and Cooking is a program hosted by Green Meadows in conjunction with the University of Illinois Extension. Participants will have the opportunity to plant and care for a vegetable garden while learning that gardening is a good physical activity. University of Illinois Extension staff will teach participants how to use the home-grown produce in healthy recipies. This will also show participants how preparing recipies at home will help save time and money. They will learn proper food safety techniques and all of the food groups through us of the MyPyramid. Paricipants will be shown fun ways to be physically active and exercise in order to promote getting 60 minutes or more of moderate activity each day. Gardening and Cooking will take place every Tuesday and Thursday starting June 10 through August 12, 2008 from 10:45 AM to 12:00 PM at Green Meadows in Danville. Participants will be ages 5 to 12 years old.

-Gardening and Cooking will be hosted by Georgetown Township in conjunction with the University of Illinois Extension. Participants will be able to assist in the planting and care of three vegetable gardens, an herb garden, and multiple flower gardens. Extension staff will show participants how to use the home-grown produce in healthy recipies that will save both time and money, all while promoting proper food safety techniques and teaching about the MyPyramid and proper serving sizes. Participants will learn how gardening is a good physical activity and learn the importance of getting 60 minutes or more of moderate physical activity a day. Gardening and Cooking will take place at the Georgetown Township every Monday starting May 6 through August 18 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This program is for adults and seniors.
