Freeport Neighborhood Garden
The Freeport Neighborhood Gardening Project began in the summer of 2005 as an effort to turn empty city lots into productive gardens. Working with the City of Freeport, U of I Extension, Master Gardeners, United Water, and Neighborhood Housing Services, a group of community members planned and planted a garden plot. The intent of the community group is to start a series of community gardens with the cooperation of many neighborhoods and organizations. The gardens would provide the opportunity for community members to have their own garden plot, work on a garden committed to supplying fresh produce to the Freeport Area Housing Cooperative Food Pantry as part of the local Plant a Row for the Hungry effort, and to serve as a gathering place for families in the communities.
