Staff Greetings!

For those of you who are wondering... "Hmmm. What are those lovely summer assistants up to this fall?" Well, we have the answers!! Jodi sent us a message from Eastern Illinois University. It reads...

Hello everyone! I hope everyone has survived fair week and did well on all of their projects! If you didn't see me at the fair, it was because I had classes staring Monday of Fair Week. I am attending Eastern Illinois University and studying Family and Consumer Science with an emphasis on Family Services. I am enjoying my classes and meeting a lot of new people. I would love to here from people at home, so if you're interested in emailing me, my address is jab_01_00@yahoo.com This summer I worked on many different projects including getting judges for the fair and trophy sponsors for the numerous trophies that we give out! If you haven't sent your Thank You yet, please do, because our sponsors really appreciate hearing from the trophy recipients. I couldn't have accomplished everything I did this summer without help from my faithful co-worker and friend, Chelsea! If you see her around, tell her thanks for doing an awesome job! We both worked really hard to put on some amazing programs. I hope everyone has an awesome school year!!! – Jodi

Meanwhile, Chelsea is continuing her last and final year at HCC, where she anticipates graduation this summer with her Associates of Arts. Besides studying J Chelsea plans on continuing to work at the Extension Office, bringing you more intriguing Focus newsletters, working on the Camp program, and other items.

Chelsea and Jodi would like to thank the 4-H'ers for being so much fun, willing to help, goofy, and reminding us why we like our job. Thank you to all the volunteers for being so patient and understanding with us. Thank you for everyone who greeted us with smiles and provided us with many laughs throughout the day. Volunteers are an interesting breed; our programs couldn't run without you; THANK YOU! Personally we want to thank Sue for always answering our unending questions with a smile, laughing with us and not at us (we hope at least) and Kim for trusting us to take on more job responsibilities and being a exceptional mentor; we couldn't do it without you guys! This summer was a GREAT experience... interesting to say the least!

Fair Committee Thank You, Thank You!!

A "Thank You" to each and every one of you who volunteered your time at this year's fair; we appreciate your help! Without you the fair activities and events couldn't happen. Whether you helped to record, judge, served as a superintendent, worked in the Recruitment Booth, helped with the daily activities, sold pizza, or helped with the shows, you made it happen! You all did such a WONDERFUL job!!

Can't believe fair has come and gone?! Neither can we! We had a lot of help before and during the fair, and we couldn't have had a successful fair without the help of many special volunteers. Many of our Fair Committee members have helped us prepare for the fair for several months; one thing is for sure--we couldn't have done it without these amazing people! THANK YOU!!

Jodi Baumgartner Kera Baumgartner Sara Earnest Denise Hayunga Chelsea McIntyre Rose Mielke Pennie Miller Nicole Reilly Stephen Reilly Sue Reilly Lindsey Scheider Candi Seffrood Kraig Wheat Karen Wilhelms

Thank you for each of your contributions; the success is based on your hard work! Thanks for making the 2004 Fair a HUGE success!

Trophy and Set-up for Youth Night

We'd also like to thank the Leadership & Awards Committee members Kathy Baumgartner, Diana Ethridge, Dorothy Wire, and Denise Hayunga for their help with the trophy delivery, set-up, and organization for Parade of Excellence. Also helping with trophies were several of our Fair committee members. A huge thanks to everyone who helped to make Youth Night enjoyable!

THANK YOU STATE FAIR HELPERS!

Many of you are aware of the changes to this year's State Fair. One of those changes was that the state required counties to send and pick up all projects to/from the State Fair at one time. We had AWESOME volunteers that helped out with this special deed. Our deepest thanks goes out to Denise Hayunga , Deb Winning, Scott and Diane Elsasser.

Fair Club Booth Winners

Congratulations to all clubs celebrating 4 -H and decorating each of your club booths. All booths were creative and fantastic; it was a tough decision for the judges. We are so proud of everything our clubs contribute to the fair and all year long. Thanks for all of your hard work and effort! This year's Top 5 club booths were:

  • 1st – Rainbow Rangers
  • 2nd – Florence Crickets
  • 3rd – Winslow Clovers
  • 4th – German Valley Golden Eagles
  • 5th – Freeport Fantastics

Garbology Contest Winners

The 2004 Garbology winners were: 1st Davis Rockets, 2nd Lena Lucky Clovers and, 3rd Whiz Kids. Thanks to all the clubs who participated–your hard work and creativity really helps to make the fairgrounds look more festive in conjunction with our annual theme.

2004 HOUSE OF CANS

Many of you may know that our community's food pantrys are in need of food. We would like to thank EVERYONE for donating food. We were able to collect 2024 cans – way above what we expected! Food Pantries that benefited from our House of Cans were: Freeport Area Church Co-Op, Le-Win Food Pantry, and German Valley Food Pantry. We greatly appreciate all the clubs that took time out of their busy fair schedule to make a donation, and the three food pantries all received several boxes of hearty canned goods, toiletries, and hygiene items. The House of Cans club winners were: Large Club- Davis Rockets, Small Club- Lena Lucky Clovers.

Again this year we had many creative projects for our Recycled Art Contest. Each year it's interesting to see what members can do to make something new from what otherwise might be garbage! This year's top winners are: · Age 5-7: Anna Kuper and Brandon Engelkens · Age 8-10: Jacob Barr, Andy Winning, and Michelle Bronkema · Age 11-14: Sebrina Lewis, Mollie Miller, and Thomas Perrin · Age 15-19: Natalie Hutson, Candi Seffrood, and Jonathon Campbell · Best of Show was Sabrina Lewis Congratulations to all of you and thanks to all who participated in this year's contest!

Club Feud Winners

Thanks to the efforts of many people, our 4-H activities were successful and went very smoothly. One of the things that we were able to do was to bring in a lot of canned goods and hygiene products for our three area food pantries again this year. We also had a successful Cakewalk on Monday evening, had clubs work hard in both the Recruitment Booth and the Pizza Hut stand. By doing your part, as individuals and clubs, we are all more successful. Throughout the fair and the many activities, clubs were awarded points for their involvement for the Club Feud Contest, and now we have tallied the points and want to congratulate our club winners in the 2004 Club Feud. This year's small club winner: Lena Lucky Clovers and the large club winner: Davis Rockets!! Congrats to all for your participation in the Fair activities!!

Volunteers needed

Are you responsible, reliable, action-orientated and enthusiastic? Are you looking for a way to make a difference, interested in problem solving, do you strive to make changes happen? Well, we are looking for you to serve on one or more of our various committees! Some of the committees include:

Volunteer Screening- screen potential volunteers in Stephenson County

Expansion and Review – evaluate how to improve the 4-H program, and implement improvements

Fair Committee – prep for the Fair, decorate the 4- H building, help the week of Fair

Leadership and Awards – plan and set up for trophies, Achievement Night, Volunteer Banquet, and Awards Judging.

Job requirements vary from committee to committee, so please call the Extension Office ASAP if you are interested in any of these committees. We really need some new members!

Art Museum: Projects Exhibited

Each year following fair we choose some interesting and creative pieces of art to be a part of the art exhibit at the Freeport Arts Center. After fair we unpacked the projects and set up the display and now is the time for our 4-H'ers and families to come see the projects on exhibit. The exhibit runs from now until Sunday October 3, 2004. Be sure to take time and see all the wonderful things that you may not have had an opportunity to see at the Fair, or stop by and see them in a whole different light. Everyone that has an item in the exhibit should have received a letter, which included an entry pass. If you didn't receive yours, please contact the Extension Office. The exhibit is up for a limited time, so don't miss it! 4- H'ers who have their projects on display may pick them up in the Extension Office on October 5th.

How do 4-H Shows Happen?

The 4-H shows are not magical events that just happen each year. The 4-H shows take a lot of hard work, time, and volunteers, in addition to the Extension Staff. If you or anyone you know would be interested in getting involved in a committee or helping out in any way, either at the club or county level, volunteers are always needed. We are now entering the time of year that we will be evaluating the 2004 shows and would appreciate any help that anyone is willing to give. If you would like to be a part of evaluating, planning, and working on the shows for the coming year contact the Extension Office and we will direct you to the correct person/ persons in order to become involved.

2004 NCVF for Leaders

There is still time to make plans to attend the 2004 Volunteer Forum. It will be held at the Adam's Mark Airport Hotel in Indiana November 11-14, 2004. You'll want to attend this year's event because: 1) It is a great way to get some new ideas, share what's worked for you, and just get away with other volunteers! There are a variety of tours and workshops available starting Thursday evening and running through Saturday, including a special youth-oriented segment for teen volunteers. To register, or get further information, contact the Extension Office or go online to: http://four-h. purdue.edu/NCRVF or contact the Extension Office at 235-4125. The site has information on hotels, schedules, and much, much more. Early Bird registration deadline is September 15.

Style Show

Congrats to all the young ladies that participated in the 2004 Style Show. Each young lady did an amazing job! Trophy winners were: 8-12 year olds- Elizabeth Moest, and 13-19 year olds- Liz Clay. Congrats ladies; hope to see you all next year!

LOST PROJECTS

The Extension staff has been notified that two fair projects have disappeared. Both are oat projects for Liz Clay and Kevin Koester, which include a bucket of oats and a poster. Kevin's project is a state fair project for next year. If you have either of these projects, please contact the Extension Office immediately so that the projects may be returned to the 4-H'ers.

Awards Applications: Awards Judging Help Needed

Applicants, your time for turning in your award application to your leader is running out. Leaders, don't forget that Award check-in is scheduled for Wednesday, September 15, from 1- 6 p.m. and Thursday, September 16th in the morning only. **Note** Awards Judging is Thursday, September 16, beginning at 6:30 p. m. We still need judges, so call the Extension Office and let us know if you can help. We could definitely use your help! And thanks in advance for your assistance!!

Mark Your Calendars!

Before we know it Achievement Night will be here. This year it is scheduled for Wednesday, November 3, beginning at 7:00 p.m. There will be numerous county awards presented that evening! The evening will take place at Highland Community College campus, Conference Center, Building H in Room H201. Also, this year's Volunteer Banquet has been scheduled for Wednesday November 10, 2004. The evening is set to begin at 7 p.m. and the location will be announced as soon as it is confirmed. Make plans to attend both events now to honor our dedicated volunteers and 4-H youth!

College Kids

If your son or daughter is enrolled in 4-H this year but is away at college we would be glad to send a monthly issue of the "4-H Focus" to them. Let the office know their mailing address. Remember anyone who has not yet reached his or her 19th birthday as of September 1, 2004 is still eligible to be enrolled. They could possibly enroll in the Kollege Krusaders "College Age" club. So if you are of college age, or know someone who is, and are still eligible to be in 4-H, we would like to hear from you! Give the Extension Office a call A.S.A.P. We would love to keep you in 4-H another year.

4-H Theme Ideas

Have a catchy theme or a snazzy slogan for 4- H? Well you're in luck! We are currently taking 4-H theme suggestions from YOU; please contact the Extension Office by September 23rd with your suggestions!

Leader's Meeting

Leaders don't forget about the Tuesday, September 28, 2004, Leader's Meeting. We will only have one meeting at 7:00 p.m. Please call the office and let us know that you plan to attend. We will hand out the new Illinois Clovers and enrollment information at this time, so we really need a representative from each club to be there.

Reminder – 4-H'er age

Just a reminder that the date for determining age of eligibility for 4-H membership or Cloverbud membership is September 1st! "Youth who are 8 years of age "or in the third grade" but have not yet reached their 19th birthday on or before September 1st, 2004, may enroll in 4-H." Cloverbuds are those that are 5 years of age but have not yet reached their 8th birthday by the September 1st deadline. If you have questions, feel free to call the Extension Office.

He who gives to me teaches me to give. ~Danish Proverb

Project Enrollment Selection

When your club reorganizes for the new year, here are a few reminders and suggestions about enrollment. At your first meeting, when you receive the "Illinois Clover", ask your family and 4-H leader for help as you consider the following:

How old are you? We know that younger members would like to sign up for many projects, but then find out there is too much to do and learn that they can't handle it all. Most of the project listings have a suggested age range; take that into consideration when making enrollment decisions. Don't try to enroll in a project that may be too advanced and try to limit your project enrollments to 2-3 projects if you are a younger member.

What projects have you taken? It is fun to try new projects, but you should find out from older members what you might face if you take a different project. Limit yourself to one or two new projects a year.

Leader Enrollment – 4-H Organizational, Project, and Jr. Leaders must be re-enrolled for the upcoming 4-H year. Keep in mind that if we don't have a current volunteer screening form on every leader, that leader will not be re-enrolled until the forms are completed, received, and they've gone through the potential volunteer process (if they are a new volunteer).

Enrollment Early

Please get your enrollment paperwork in as soon as possible!

That way you will receive your books and information right away at the beginning of the year!

Cloverbud Projects

Once again this year the Cloverbud project areas are:

Aerospace I
Arts & Crafts
Bicycle I
Health – It's Your Choice I
Theater Arts I
Caring for My Pet
Caring for My Room
Kids in the Kitchen
Watching my Garden Grow

Cloverbud projects can be exhibited at the fair and they receive ribbons, but cannot receive premium money or trophies. Leaders are responsible for making sure the Cloverbuds and their parents/guardians are aware of, and understand, the exhibit rules. For more information about the Cloverbud program see your 4-H Program Book, or contact the Extension Office at 235-4125.

Parade of Excellence Thanks

We love our trophy sponsors; please make sure you send them Thank You's. We appreciate their support. Please make sure you spend a few moments to thank them for their contributions; without them there would be no Parade of Excellence.

Horse Show

Stephenson County Mounted Patrol and Stephenson County 4-H Fun Day Horse Show. "Where Everyone Is a Winner" Sunday, September 19th, 2004 starting at 10 a.m. For more info please contact the office.

Keep Your Club Active

Looking for Ways to Get Your Club Active?

Here are a few things you and your club might consider doing! Here are some interesting ideas to try in your club:

Career Exploration: Organize a job shadow program where a 4-H member spends the day with an employed person of their career choice; have family members share information about their careers; or tour job sites of jobs that interest your club's members.

Community Service: Provide babysitting service for some of the following events/activities: blood drives, holiday shopping, etc.; plant or weed gardens at area hospitals or homes for the aged; spend time with nursing home residents, share seasonal activities or items with them; donate food or needed items to the local food pantry; adopt a family over the holidays and make the holiday a little more special for those in need. There are so many things your club can do in this area–so be creative!

Conservation & Wildlife: Clean and repair duck boxes at a wildlife refuge; study and practice conserving water and maintaining water quality; develop and maintain a wildlife area in your community; tour a local wildlife area.

Environment: Plant and care for trees and flowers in community areas; promote and participate in community clean-ups; practice conservation; secure seed from seed companies; sell sweet corn; save receipts to put inputs back into the community; be involved in the local recycling program.

Intercultural: Host an international night with all types of things; from food to entertainment, from another country; write foreign 4-H pen pals; learn the customs of another culture, including their lifestyles, cities, states, and countries; host an exchange student, either for the year or for several weeks in the summer.

Your opportunities are endless. Be creative and everyone will benefit from the experience!

FACC Needs Help

FACC greatly appreciated our donations of food during the week of Fair, unfortunately, they are facing hard times and shelves are nearly bare. We urge you to help our community's less fortunate and donate items that they are in high demand of. Items tha t they need include: peas, corn, green beans, mixed vegetables, tomato products, soup, peanut butter, potato or stuffing, macaroni & cheese, pasta/noodles, canned meat, tuna, pork & beans, fruit, jello or pudding, cereal, crackers or cookies, cake or other mixes, drinks, flour, sugar (just about any food item!) FACC also tries to provide people with personal items that include; hand soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, toilet paper, paper towels, dish soap, dry laundry soap, shaver, shaving cream. Whatever you can do would help in the biggest way!

Good Luck, Students

As the school doors open for the year, we hope everyone puts their best foot forward, make sure you get your assignments done on time, (preventing a lot of unwanted stress in the future), and most of all ENJOY school. All too soon you will be entering the "real world", so make the best of what you have now!

Officer's Training

As new officers are getting elected at the club level, please MARK your calendar for the MANDATORY Officer's Training on Wednesday, October 27 at Highland Community College. Every officer will attend a formal training that will give them advice and tips in order for them to do their duties to the best of their abilities. All officers should attend, even if you've held your office before.

Family Night

With the hectic summer and the rush of school, sports, and whatever else may be controlling your life, don't forget to set some quality family time at least once a week. With the rush of everyone's busy lives it's easy to be distracted, so take advantage of the precious time that you have with your family. Some enjoyable activities you could participate in are: Have a picnic, go see a movie or watch a movie (don't forget the popcorn), make dinner together, take a hike thru Oakdale Nature Preserve, walk around the block, play some games (pictionary, monopoly, cards), garden, make cookies, star watch. 4-H Families can also attend the Family Fun Night at the YMCA on October 10 (see enclosed flyer). These are a few ideas, don't limit yourselves to these; make your family night a memorable experience! Make the time while you can, and enjoy it to the fullest!

Job Opportunities in Washington D.C.

Do you know someone between the ages of 18 and 23 with excellent leadership and communication skills? If so, have them visit http://www. wowwashington.org/programassistant.html. and apply to be a program assistant today. We are currently accepting applications for Program Assistants (PA's) for our spring program, Wonders of Washington. PA's receive a weekly stipend as well as room and board at the Nation 4-H Youth Conference Center. Similar to CWF, WOW PA's become licensed tour guides for the Washington, D.C. area and learn to facilitate educational workshops. Positions begin January 31 with an intense four- week training and end May.

Federation Delegates

Leaders, don't forget to get those Federation Delegate forms filled out. They need to be turned back in soon. We'd love to ha ve some new delegates for the upcoming year and strongly suggest that each club is represented at Federation by the club President and several other club members. We are looking for 4-H'ers that are 12 and older who want to be involved, do things for the community, learn some new skills, and have FUN while doing so! If you have some delegates currently attending please have them sign up again too! You can send as many as you want as long as they are 12 or older, mature, and willing to follow through on commitments. This is a great opportunity for older 4-H'ers to improve their leadership skills, meet new friends, become involved at the county level, and stay in 4-H!

Federation: August News

  • The Federation meeting was called to order by Co-president Sara Ernest on August 16th, 2004, at HCC building R 101, at 6:30 p.m. Pledges were led by Sara. Roll call was led by Lindsey.
  • The Co-presidents Report was given by Sara. She and Kraig have mainly been working on Summer Federation Events. Annie gave the Secretary's Report and collected Treasure Chest forms. Sara gave the Treasurer's Report. She also gave financials for several Federation events, such as car wash. Sara handed out committee recognition for the committee members who helped with Car Wash. The Rec Report was given by Lindsey. Make- A-Difference-day was cancelled due to the fact that the house wasn't ready for us to come and paint. Lindsey handed out flyers for Movie Night, which will be on September 27th, at the Lindo Theatre, at 6:45 p.m. (times may change depending on the movie we'll be seeing.) For the October meeting we are thinking about going to a Corn Maze; we are looking for ideas of places to go. Maggie gave the Scrapbook Report. She and Krissy are almost up to date for the Fed scrapbook, and it's looking great.
  • Kraig gave an update for the Pizza Hut sales. Committee members need to be at the Fairgrounds August 21stat 1:00 p.m., to help set- up. It's also important that the committee members show up to run the stand on their given day.

  • Jodi asked if anyone was interested in sponsoring a trophy this year. There are still two to be sponsored Curt and Pennie Miller have agreed to sponsor one.
  • We voted for the meeting day and the results are yet to be determined. We aren't quite sure when the new day will take effect, but we are thinking it should be when the new officers take their positions.
  • Chelsea gave an update for the Recycled Art Contest. All you have to do is make a project out of something recycled. Be sure to enter your project, because there are some awesome prizes to be won.
  • An update for the Recruitment Booth was given by Jodi. There are many activities such as face painting, Club Jeopardy, a duck pond, and much more.
  • Candi gave an update for the Kiss-A-4-HLivestock- project.
  • The Chicago Trip is over and everyone had tons of fun! We went shopping, got to see Chinatown, and had a ball at Toni and Tina's Wedding. If you didn't go this year, be sure to sign up next year, because you never know what kind of fun you'll have, with Federation in Chicago!
  • Lindsey gave a update for the Flamingo Fund-Raiser. The flamingos have been rounded up and are back in their "corral". Lindsey gave out recognition to the people on the committee. Great job you guys.
  • An update for the Fair fund-raiser was given by Chelsea. We will be selling ear plugs during the truck and tractor pulls.
  • Maggie and Sara gave an update for club Officer's Training. It will be held on Wednesday, November 10th, at 7:00 pm. It is important that you show up to this as a training requirement for the new officers not only in Federation, but in your own clubs as well.
  • The new officers have been elected, and there are some new faces on the team. The new team consists of: Co-presidents- Kraig, Sara, and Candi. Secretary- Amanda Winning.
