Sara's Summer Assistant report

Hello to everyone!! I hope that everyone has enjoyed his or her first month of summer. While you are spending your time out in the sun, please remember to protect yourself. I know that you hear this a lot but it is really important!!! Also I hope that you have completed your General Project's Day exhibits. DON'T wait till the night before to finish your project. I have learned from experience that things can fall apart and there won't be enough time to fix it. So please take it from me, a 4-H alumni, DO NOT wait until the last minute to do your projects. Good Luck as you enter this busy, upcoming show season. Now that I am done lecturing you, I want to give you an overview of what I have been doing. I have been busy preparing and participating in 4-H camp. Also, I have been working on getting trophy sponsors, and planning two day camps and the Magic Waters Trip. I highly encourage you to attend these activities. Additionally, I have been planning the Dress Revue contest, and planning to get State Fair projects to Springfield and back. Oh, and I have been working in the Little Sprouts Garden. For those that don't know me, I am not a gardener and do not enjoy working in gardens. However, the wonderful staff at the extension office has shown me the fun in gardening. (Please don't let my mom know that I said that!!!) On that note, before I tell anymore than I should, I end my note. Have fun preparing all of your projects and good luck to everyone!!

Lindsey's Summer Assistant report

Hello all! I hope all is going well for you. I just wanted to say that I love summer. Don't you? I love the sunshine and the flowers. It is a fabulous time to be outside...except I have been inside most of the time. I'm working hard and it's all for you. I have been working on getting all the judges and recorders ready for General Project's Day. Actually, I have been working on all aspects of getting ready for General Project's Day. I also have been working on the two day camps that Sara and I are planning. The first is an orienteering overnight that promises to be a blast and the second goes along with our 4-H theme this year: 4-H...Take the Trip. It is a cultural day camp where you will be able to learn about different cultures, make crafts from other countries, and try some ethnic food. I also have been preparing for the Flower Arranging Contest and the Cake Decorating Contest. Each show allows the 4-H'ers involved to show their talents as they construct their project. Another thing I have been working on is Little Sprouts Garden. I have been easing Sara into the wonderful world of flowers, pruning, mulching, and weeding. And with that I will say good-bye. Good luck with all of the shows and enjoy your summer!

Your favorite summer assistant,

Lindsey

Build Self-Estemm

As 4–H'ers plan and prepare their exhibits for the 4–H show, we would like to encourage parents to remember to allow the members to do their own work. While it is ok for mom and dad to give a few suggestions, or maybe a little help, it is more important to allow the 4–H'er to do his or her own work. Judging is a time for judges to see the work of the 4–H members, not the parents. Our judges want to know what the 4–H'ers have learned, and how they completed the projects, not what they watched their parents complete. Please remember, 4–H is for youth, and your 4–H member will only gain from the experience if they do their own work. While the 4–H program is a family organization, this is one of those times where the family should show their support through their words of encouragement! Let's help our 4–H members grow and blossom!
