It's a fact of life--many of the students in your class will go home tonight to an empty house. Many families choose self-care for their children because of cost and availability of childcare. Operation Safe Kids teaches children some of the basics that they will need to know in order to stay home alone.

Through in-class sessions students learn about such things as phone skills, personal safety, and food safety. Additionally, there are take-home pages that help parents understand what their child has learned and what they can do to make their home a safer environment for children. This unit could also work well for after-school programs and for a "Parent Night" event.
