Have you ever eaten a landfill? How about carrying out the recycling process by making new paper from old? Do you know who dirtied the water? Extension staff members are available to come to your school for these always popular, hands-on, interactive lessons.
Students can construct an edible landfill. The food layers represent the actual layers found in a landfill including: the sand and gravel layer, dirt layer, clay layer, garbage layer, drainage tubes, and grass.
Or, using blenders to create paper pulp, students can try the papermaking process and have their very own piece of recycled paper. The 4 R's are emphasized throughout.
Students may also participate in an activity where they pollute a miniature lake.
The Earth Day is Every Day lessons alternate yearly. Be sure to watch for the flyer in your building this spring for classroom or school registration.
Each program requires 40 to 45 minutes and a space where students can move about. One central school location is required for the program. Invite us into your school and your students will learn why EVERY DAY SHOULD BE EARTH DAY!
