Born and raised on a farm in Vermilion County, Illinois, Jim has a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
He has been an employee of University of Illinois Extension since 1971. He has served as Extension Adviser, Agriculture in Stephenson (3 years), LaSalle (4 years) and Lee (14 years) counties.
Jim assumed duties of Extension Educator, Crop Systems at the Freeport Extension Center in 1992 and then at the Rockford Extension Center in August 1998. He has responsibility for Extension field crop programming in ten northwestern Illinois counties. Subject matter topics include production and management practices of corn, soybean, small grain, legumes/grasses, and hay/pasture. His specializes in forages and soil fertility.
Jim is a member of the American Society of Agronomy, a Certified Crop Adviser, and past president of the Illinois Forage and Grassland Council.
Program Offerings
As an Extension Educator, Crop Systems, Jim helps clientele with production management practices for grain and forage crops.
He specializes in programs related to hay and pastureproduction, soil fertility, and nutrient management. Jim conducts research and demonstrations involving grain crops,corn silage, cover crops, forages,and manure.
He writes a weekly crop-related news column titled "From the Fields".
