Art of Quilting Gains Popularity with Both Youth and Adults

Learning about how to care for fabrics, thread a needle, and appreciate the skills of their great-grandmothers is the focus of quilting classes, sponsored by University of Illinois Extension, Franklin County. Young people from throughout the area have been learning how to make a quilt from start to finish.

"As the kids to cut fabric, use a sewing machine and iron their quilt blocks, they learn valuable skills to help them care for their clothes," says Alice Hunt, U of I Extension community worker and class instructor. "And, properly taking care of clothes helps them last longer, which saves money."

During the past several weeks, participants have made a "rail fence" quilt, a basic patchwork quilt, and quilted totebags.

Due to the growing interest, a "Quilt Block of the Month" group was also organized for adults. Participants in this group have been making a quilt block each month since January. By the end of the year, they will have a finished quilt.

A grant from the National Quilting Association helped make these classes possible.
