Technology Comes to Life with Robotics Program

When innovative educators have innovative teaching tools, amazing things can happen for kids. In Randolph County, and in counties throughout the state, science, engineering and technology are coming to life with the 4-H robotics curriculum.

Using computers and LEGO™ Mindstorm kits, young people are learning how to build a robot and then program that robot to accomplish specific tasks.

"The robots have sensors that respond to light, sound and touch. They also have an ultrasonic sensor, which measures distance and responds to movement. These sensors enable a robot to follow the commands of the builder," explains Yvonne Eater with University of Illinois Extension, Randolph County. "The kids program the robots to go specific distances and to go around obstacles. This experience gives young people a glimpse into the growing field of robotic technology and how robots can be used in industry, manufacturing and many other areas."

Statewide, the robotics program is offered in a variety of settings …. as a 4-H school enrichment program, as an after-school program, and as a 4-H project for club members. In Randolph County, the after-school program is held at the local Housing Authority in Sparta and is made possible by a grant from the Illinois 4-H Foundation.

"The first annual robotics competition, which was held on the University of Illinois campus in April, drew 16 teams from across the state," adds Lisa Bouillion Diaz from the Illinois State 4-H Office. "The four senior teams and 12 junior teams included youth ages 8 to 18. The U of I College of Engineering and Department of Ag Engineering assisted with the competition."

Science and technology education is just one example of how U of I Extension is helping young people "put knowledge to work."
