E-Shopping Seminar Helps Consumers Get the Most from Their Money

As Illinoisans continue to feel the financial squeeze of the economy, many residents may turn to the internet in search of lower prices on household goods, clothing, electronics, holiday gifts and a wide array of merchandise.

Online shopping offers several advantages to consumers. You can shop 24 hours a day, 365 days a year from the comfort of your home. You avoid standing in checkout lines, dealing with crowds and fighting traffic. You also save money on gas, and often food, by not going on a shopping trip.

"One huge advantage of online shopping is that with a click of a mouse, you can research a product and compare prices," says Lois Smith, University of Illinois Extension consumer and family economics educator. "But, online shopping also has its pitfalls. Fraud can occur in the form of false advertising, unacceptable merchandise or even identity theft."

To help consumers get the most value for their money, Smith and other Extension educators are delivering the seminar E-Shopping: Tips, Tricks, and Transactions. The seminar is being taught throughout the state, reaching thousands of Illinoisans.

"Seminar topics include the basics such as knowing the company you are buying from and making sure you understand the terms, conditions and all costs associated with an online purchase," says Smith. "We also talk about specific ways that consumers can protect themselves when buying online – such as using a secure web browser and making sure encryption is used for financial transactions."
