Participants in the Family Nutrition Program (FNP) include senior citizens, single parents, and families with young children, food stamp eligible singles and families and school aged children.
Shelby County FNP relies on collaboration with many community agencies including WIC, Head Start, local schools and libraries, C.E.F.S., Peace Meal county sites, Shelby County Senior Center and Shelby County Health Department.
We present programming and information to county schools, senior centers, libraries and food pantries.
In addition to 461 monthly newsletters distributed throughout the county, we have provided the following:
- Hand Washing Programming to 115 Head Start children, stressing the importance of germs and the spread of disease.
- Nutrition and Wellness Programs to 187 school aged children with topics that included "Hear Your Heart," "We've Got Milk," and "The Little Red Hen."
- Safe Trick and Treating information to 329 children age Toddler-4th Grade.
- County Wide Health Fair with 36 vendors for Senior Citizen Wellness and Nutrition attended by 148 seniors.
- Recipes and Food Safety instruction to food panties with specific commodity surpluses.
- Distribution and delivery of holiday food baskets with nutritious recipes and safe food handling instruction to needy families within the county.
