Shelby County HCE History

Shelby County Home Bureau was organized in 1936 with the support of Shelby County Farm Bureau and with the help of Miss Anna Searle from the University of Illinois. Mrs. Gayle Lichtenwalter was elected as president. The University required that at least 350 members be enlisted. After miles of travel and time invested by seven women on the committee, this goal was reached. Ours was the 47th Illinois Home Bureau to be organized. An office was established. Romeyn Markland was hired as Home Adviser and stayed for 1 year. Then Anita Kessler was hired. There was office furniture to buy and then a car was purchased, which Anita reimbursed by payments. Dues were $5. Twenty units were formed.
