The Family Nutrition Program (FNP) reaches out to senior citizens, families and children of all ages, teaching them the importance of making healthy food choices and managing their resources to better provide for their families when resources are limited. The FNP program helps eligible food stamp recipients become better educated about nutrition, food safety and food budgeting. Nancy Briggs, Christian County FNP coordinator, provides information and workshops at a variety of sites around the county, including the Department of Human Services, WIC office, food pantries, libraries, social service agencies, senior citizen's centers, housing authorities, churches and schools. The Family Nutrition Program is funded with Food Stamp Administrative funds by the Food and Consumer Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. The main goal of the FNP Program is to help people better understand the link between diet and health. FNP encourages healthier eating habits early in a child's life so they are firmly established by the age twelve. Families are changing and as our world becomes more complex, University of Illinois Extension provides individuals and families with programs and information to help them cope with change. Family life programming is available in the form of workshops, classes, publications and newsletters on many topics including:
- Parenting
- Child development
- Day care
- Communications
- Caring for older adults
- Single parenting
- Preparing children to stay at home
- Family violence
- Family relationships
