Natural Resources & Environment
Illinois is rich in natural resources with the most inland miles of streams in the U.S. The thousands of miles of streams and hundreds of acres of lakes; combined with millions of acres of cropland, forests and other natural areas provide a tremendous diversity of natural resources for habitat, the economy, tourism and recreation. Also, the rapidly increasing urbanized areas; losses of natural areas and reconstruction of such areas make the management of these resources all pieces of the environmental puzzle in Illinois.

The Natural Resources and Environment section of our website contains several resources to help understand some of these current NRM issues.
