Scratching is a normal behavior for cats, but destructive scratching can be the cause of a damaged human-cat bond.  The traditional declawing procedure is highly controversial, and is opposed by most cat enthusiasts.  Safer, easier, and less expensive alternatives include regular nail trimming and training cats to use scratching posts.
