When University of Illinois crop scientist Fred Below began growing tropical maize, the form of corn grown in the tropics, he was looking for novel genes for the utilization of nitrogen fertilizer and was hoping to discover information that could be useful to American corn producers. Now, however, as Todd Gleason Reports, it appears that maize itself may prove to be the ultimate U.S. biofuels crop.
The price of farmland compared to its capitalized value is very high. As Todd Gleason reports, the last time per acre prices exceeded the capitalized value by so much occurred a few years before the farm crisis of the mid 1980’s.

move toward larger buildings, the research team at the Bioenvironmental and
Structural Systems (BESS) Lab at the University of Illinois is working hard to
