March 2008
Master Gardener News

Presidents' Comments

After a month of snow, ice and cold, it was really nice to have a "shirt sleeve" day. The

warm southerly breezes make one desire to get outside and dig around in the garden.

Unfortunately not yet as the ground is still frozen, but by the end of this month we

should be getting back into the swing of gardening: cleaning out and preparing plant

beds, starting plants for transplanting, etc. We have a number of opportunities to serve

our county's citizens (Luthy, Bel-Wood, Help-Line, ICC, Greenway, etc.), so now is a

good time to be signing on to the projects where you want to participate. Some have

noted that there is a social component to our membership in the MG Program. I agree.

Being Master Gardeners gives us the opportunity to share time with others of like

interests while we help others and learn more about the natural world in which we live.

Peoria MG Meeting Hightlights: 02/20/08

27 members present. Lynn asked everyone to contact her if they have any changes in

their phone numbers or addresses (regular or e-mail). Betty Raker, Floyd McMahon,

and Arra McMahon were reinstated as active MGs. Kathy Hasselberg asked that if

someone has not signed a 2008 agreement that they do so and get it to Kathy. Kathy also

needs volunteers to help at MG training classes. Lee Hammond stated the Help Line

will be starting on March 17th and can use volunteers. Plant A Row will be at the same

location as last year. MG will be participating in the plant sale at Metro Center on May

3rd. Margie Karl said that volunteers are needed to help on the 3rd Saturday of the

month at the Farmers Market in Bartonville. Nancy Lemieux is recovering from a

stroke. She is now in intensive rehab therapy and then she will be moving to Denver to

be close to her son. Nancy Crawford volunteered to do a Plant of the Month talk in

April.

Illinois MG Apparel Available Soon

Check the March-April issue of Imagine for information about ordering Illinois MG apparel. A color photo sheet of items offered will be included with the Imagine newsletter and a copy will also be sent to the training sites for distribution to the trainees. All ordering will be on-line this year.
