Peoria Master Gardener Minutes - 10/19/07
Twenty-three members and five guests began the meeting by finding some really good
food in the potluck table area. At some point we segued into the business meeting.
Recent Events:
State Conference - Attending were Phyllis Baylor, Terry Flaherty, Dixie Krishner, Patsy
Spitz, Patrice Swanson, and Lynn Webb. Margie Karl and Bonnie Williams from Peoria
received state awards. Good comments have been heard about the speakers at the
Conference. Next year's conference will be in Lombard, Illinois.
ICC Landscape and Garden Day - Margie Karl thanked the MG's who participated in
the day's events. Attendance overall was lower than last year, but it was definitely a
good day.
Recurring Events/Activities:
Bartonville Farmer's Market - The last Market was September 15. The MG's table topic
was Lawn Maintenance and Weed Control. It was presented by Pat Middleton and
Bonnie Hunt.
Projects - I.C.C. Demo Garden - A tri-county meeting will be held September 27 at 2:00
p.m. at the I.C.C. Hort Center to discuss options and plans for next year's project. This is
your chance to be part of the future direction of the Demo Garden. The Help Line will
be open for calls during the winter months, but monitored less frequently than the
summer scheduling. The Help Line number can therefore be used in any articles or
publications even after October. A letter has been received from the Salvation Army
thanking MG's for the produce from the PAR garden.
Old Business -
WTVP has given MG's a $3,000 value for sponsorship spots on the "Victory Garden"
TV show credits. This will be approximately 50 showings of the MG name and logo in
the coming year from Oct. '07 to Oct. '08. This is the result of the assistance from MG's
during the May WTVP Garden Walk.
Surveys - A number of surveys have made it to the box on Julann's desk. Thanks to
everyone who participated.
New Business -
The Nominating Committee for 2008 has been selected. It will
consist of Bonnie Williams, Fran Stagg, and Terry Flaherty. The
slate of recommended officers would be announced at the October
meeting. Be sure to contact one of the Nominating Committee if
you have suggestions or want to be an officer for 2008.
Other Discussion/Announcements
Pat Middleton had purchased 100 license plate holders from the
West Virginia MG group. The slogan is "Master Gardeners...They
Know all the Good Dirt". They are available to anyone for $5.00
each. Contact Pat to purchase one or two or more.
The next Board Meeting is October 9 at 12:30 p.m. The next
monthly meeting is October 17 at 1:00 p.m. Both are at the
Extension office site.
Members were given the opportunity to remember the recent
passing of Lois Coppernoll by making donations to either the
Chillicothe Rescue 33 or the I.C.C. Green Thumb Award. Envelopes
were passed to collect these donations.
Following adjournment, Judy Ziemba showed slides taken during
her trip to the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden near Cape
Town, South Africa. This garden has been called one of the most
beautiful botanical gardens in the world. Judy's nice landscape and
flower photos were really a treat.
