The Chicago Flower Show is cancelled this year. The
Henry-Stark County MGs are considering a spring horticultural
bus trip to the Tulip Festival in Pella, Iowa. Plans are
tentative, but will be either Thurs. May 3, Fri. May 4 or Sat.

Celebrate Gardening in the Natural State!
May 2-5, 2007 • Little Rock, Arkansas
The host committee has been working hard to make sure that this
will be a great conference with lots to offer our fellow Master
Gardeners from around the country and Canada.
Conference Site: The conference will be hosted at the Peabody
Hotel/Statehouse Convention Center in downtown Little Rock
from May 2 to 5, 2007. Please save those dates, and think about
coming early and staying late. There is so much to see and do in
the Natural State. We encourage you to take advantage of this
opportunity to see Little Rock and other areas of Arkansas. We will
forward information about the pre- and post-conference tours in the
near future, and suggest things to do and places to see while you're
here. You are going to love our state and enjoy some real Southern

Hotel Reservations: The Peabody hotel is now accepting conference
reservations. The IMG conference rate at the Peabody is
$130/night for double or king accommodations with double
occupancy. There are also some club level rooms blocked off at the
rate of $160/night. ("Club level" includes: continental breakfast,
hot hors d'oeuvres, evening cordials and petit fours, complete
honor bar, complimentary use of the athletic club, valet parking,
private concierge, express check out, and VIP nightly turndown
services.) These rates are good from April 30 to May 6, 2007. Be
sure to mention that you are attending the International Master
Gardener Conference May 2 to 5, 2007 to receive the special rate.

State Master Gardener Conference 2007:
Meeting date change: The 2007 Illinois State Master Gardener
Conference will be held September 6, 7 and 8 at the Crowne Plaza
Hotel in Springfield.
West Central Region Master Gardeners and Extension Staff
members are invited to help plan this yearly event. The first
steering committee meeting was held on Monday, October 9,
University of Illinois Extension Building, Illinois State Fairgrounds,
in Springfield.
This meeting was for those interested in planning the conference.
Involvement from all units is encouraged. If you are interested in
helping with the conference by being a worker bee, please let us
know how you would like to be involved.

Spring is not far off. Be ready to jump into the garden season by
attending Garden Day 2007 – The Garden Journey sponsored by
University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners of Champaign
County held on Friday March 2 from noon to 4 p.m. and
Saturday March 3 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn 1001
Killarney in Urbana , IL . Enjoy programs by internationally
known speakers and shopping among garden vendors.
On Friday learn from Janet Macunovich about Pathways and
Focal Points – how to design and install in this hands on lecture
from this internationally known author and instructor.
On Saturday Janet starts the line up of speakers as she continues
with a discussion about Landscape Design: Adapting the Best
from What you See around Town. Pam Palechek of the
Michigan School of Gardening will share her tips for season long
interest in Garden Color: Tried and True from Start to Finish.
Leaves no longer take a back seat to flowers. Continuing on
Saturday discover The Dark and Light Side of Foliage or how to
design with colorful leaves without creating a color induced
migraine from Perennial Plant Association's 2006 Award of Merit
winner and author Stephanie Cohen. Plants that Love to Live will
be the topic of Roy Diblik of Northwind Perennial Farm and
collaborator on the new Lurie Garden in Chicago 's Millennium
Park . He will show how native and non-native plants can work
together to provide diverse, yet long lasting gardens.
Pre-registration for Garden Day is required: Friday and
Saturday $75 for Master Gardeners (MGs) and $85 general public;
Friday only $25 MGs and $30 general public; or Saturday only $55
MGs and $65 general public. Fee includes programs by these
internationally known garden writers, handouts, continental
breakfast and buffet lunch on Saturday, snacks, and time to shop
among garden vendors with many unique items. New feature this
year is online registration and payment by credit card. Go to our

(235 miles into trip–4 hours of drive time, 1/2 hour comfort stop
in Crawfordsville–McDonald's, plus the time change)
12:30 p.m. - Arrival in Batesville, Indiana - Lunch at the Sherman
House in Batesville. Buffet lunch of Yankee Pot Roast, Tossed
Garden Salad, Whipped Potatoes, Carrots and German Chocolate
Cake. Plus guests will enjoy the famous deep fried biscuits, butter,
apple butter and choice of non-alcoholic beverage.
2:00 p.m. - Departure and travel 48 miles
3:00 p.m. - Arrival to Eden Parks Krohn Conservatory which is a
nationally recognized showcase of more than 3,500 plant species
from all over the world. The Palm, Tropical, Desert and Orchid
houses exhibit permanent display of exotic plants in natural
settings, complete with a 20 foot rainforest waterfall.
5:00 p.m. - Departure (hotel is less than 8 miles)
5:15 p.m. -- Check into newly opened (April 2006) Country Inn &
Suites by Carlson, Wilder, KY, your host hotel, for your overnight
visit. We will have time to relax, enjoy the heated indoor pool/
whirlpool or the fitness center.

6:30 p.m. - Upon arrival at the Hofbrauhaus Newport we will
enjoy a Braumeister's Bier tasting - a sample of four of their

9:00 a.m. - Departure and travel to California, Ohio (14 miles)
9:30 a.m. -- Arrival at Coney Island and The Cincinnati Flower
Show – "The king of all flower shows". The ONLY North
American flower and garden show endorsed by the Royal
Horticultural Society of Great Britain, producer of the world
renowned Chelsea Flower Show. This is a magical setting with
eye popping visions at every turn, with container gardens,
window boxes, patio and condominium gardens, table settings
and much more. Make sure you allow time to shop at the
Gardeners' Market, which offers dozen and dozens of vendors
from around the U.S. and overseas. Lunch at the Flower Show is
your responsibility.
***Please note a lot of walking on somewhat uneven ground is
required. The entire mart circles around Lake Como and is not
totally covered. Bring comfortable shoes, umbrellas, rain apparel
and jackets.
2:00 p.m. -- Departure and travel to Batesville (55 miles)
3:00 p.m. -- Enjoy a stop at Weberdings Carvings – guided tour.
Established in 1942, these master carvers are very skilled at the
restoration of many types of works. These include carousel
animals, statues, garden carvings, furniture and metal pieces.
Skilled artists also specialize in portrait carving. Over the years
they have carved portraits of many US Presidents and Sports
Celebrities. There is so much to see including furniture, signs,
fireplace mantels and life size statues. Guests will love the gift
shop.
4:00 p.m. - Travel to Covington Indiana (150 miles – 2 1/2 hrs.)
6:30 p.m. - Dinner at the The Beef House Restaurant. Travelers
choice on Shrimp, Chicken or Rib Eye Entrees including Salad
Bar, Soup, Homemade rolls and butter, coffee, tea (hot or iced),
Pepsi or Slice and Ice Cream.
7:30 p.m. - Departure and travel to Bloomington, Illinois (100
miles – 1 1/2 hrs. – time change)
8:15 – 8:30p.m. – Arrival in Bloomington – University of
Illinois Extension-McLean County
Price per person includes: One night accommodations, taxes,
luggage handling included.
One breakfast, one lunch, one dinner, plus meal gratuities. All
