4-H Youth Development

  • 4-H Community Clubs (16) - 393 youth, 126 full-time volunteers. Annual county activities conducted in support of 4-H club experience included: 4-H Leader Training; county fund-raiser; Penny Carnival; bowling and softball tournaments; junior & advanced project workshop days; 4-H horse drill team activities; horse bowl and hippology contest team activities; promotional efforts; livestock judging teams; and the ongoing efforts of several volunteer groups that support the 4-H program overall.
  • Three-county resident 4-H Camp - 135 campers (35% Ogle) & 29 counselors (28% Ogle). Included extensive multi-session training program for the counselor team.
  • Ogle County 4-H Fair - 317 4-Hers exhibiting representing 81% of total membership.
  • 4-H School Enrichment Programs - 2,196 youth. Included the following: the 4-H Embryology Project; Earth Day is Every Day presentations; 4-H Bread Programs; Walk In My Shoes Intergenerational Programs; Welcome to the Real World; The Disappearing Earth; and Ag Awareness Day.
  • 4-H Wilderness Day (history and outdoor education)- 113 youth.
  • Eight-county Science Siesta - 165 girls (17% Ogle). Intended to heighten girls' interest in science-related career fields.
  • Eight-county Advanced Science Siesta (Fall, '06) - 40 girls (24% Ogle). Advanced Science Siesta (Summer '07)–33 girls (24% Ogle).
  • Five-county 4-H Health Jam–100 youth (20% Ogle). Increases knowledge of health-related career options and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Two month Tiny Bloomers 4-H Children's Garden Program, Rochelle–40 + youth.

Agriculture & Natural Resources

  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM)-Implementation of western corn rootworm monitoring program, root digs and corn borer survey in conjunction with others around the state. Western bean cutworm monitoring in corn fields and soybean sentinel plot monitoring for the presence of soybean rust and monitoring of aphids. Plant disease, insect and weed management workshops promoted the prudent and timely use of pesticides as well as cultural, biological, natural and mechanical means of pest management.
  • Crop Production-Soybean crop production workshop, 3 corn plots, Corn and Soybean Classic, and fertilizer dealer clinic, two-day Crops Management Conference in February, Soybean Cyst Nematode screening.
  • Pesticide Safety Training for private pesticide (56 trained) and commercial applicators--testing conducted by IL Department of Agriculture. (Over 100 participants total)
  • Farm Management-work with Ogle County FSA to inform and educate growers and landowners, both individually and in groups, about farm programs and conservation opportunities. FAST tools training and farm.doc training. These tools provided by U of I Extension help individuals manage finances and economics for farm operations.
  • Natural Resources-Grazing workshop, regional drainage seminar and work with Ogle County SWCD, NRCS and Blackhawk Hills RC&D on a Technical Service Provider workshop, Horse Pasture Workshop.
  • Ogle County Ag Awareness Day created to raise awareness of agriculture's impact on daily life-382 Ogle County 5th graders.
  • Provided workshops for SWCD's Lee-Ogle Stewardship Days-450 total youth reached (67% Ogle)

Nutrition, Family & Consumer Sciences

  • Family Nutrition Program-Over 550 Ogle County residents are reached monthly through this nutrition education program. Program locations include: Department of Human Services; WIC Rochelle & Oregon (Ogle County Health Department); Senior Centers (3 communities); Food Pantries (3 communities); government housing (3 communities), and Central, Lincoln, and May Schools, Rochelle. 32 youth attended Summer Cooking Schools in Rochelle.
  • "Lessons for Living" programs offered through Ogle County Home & Community Education Association--18 leaders trained to deliver programs to 129 members and other groups throughout Ogle County. Lessons included: "Forgiveness-The Gift You Give Yourself," "Schemes, Scams, and Flim-Flams-Consumer Fraud," "Food & Fitness-Fact or Fiction," "Retirement Realities."
  • Food Safety: Food Service Refresher Course (required for individuals to maintain Food Service Sanitation License)-41 licensees renewed. "Serve It Safely" training for volunteer groups-18 attendees.
  • Nutrition-29 attendees
    • "Heart Healthy Cooking", "Dining with Diabetes"
    • Current Topics in Nutrition (TeleNet series for nutrition professionals)-2 Registered Dietitians
  • Consumerism: "Decluttering Your Life"-co-sponsored with Mt. Morris Public Library--17 attendees

Home Horticulture

  • Winter, spring, summer and fall gardening information seminars via Telenet (12 different topics each year-36 attendees).
  • Master Gardener Hotline 3 days per week during the growing season answering questions from the public. Over 250 questions and problems addressed in 2006.
  • Individual presentations for different groups on topics such as butterfly gardening and growing perennials.
  • "Gardening Series" seminar series in March (44 participants at 3 different locations in the county).
  • Oak Wilt Seminar-39 participants
  • Develop/maintain gardens at the Ogle County Fairgrounds.
  • Ready, Set...Grow and Ready, Set... Fall gardening workshops in coordination with Lee and Whiteside County Extension and Master Gardeners.

Community & Economic Development

  • Local Government Tele-Institute Programs-47 attendees: "TIF Districts", "Business Retention & Expansion", "Entrepreneurial Communities", "Economic Development in Illinois", "Orientation for County Officials", "Update on Legislative Issues."
  • Hispanic Health Advisory Partnership in Rochelle-2 issues of Spanish newsletter distributed (800 each); workshops on cardiovascular disease and raising your kids in another culture presented in Spanish (50 families).
