This 4-H project kit includes the materials needed for four activities focused on rock and mineral investigation:
1) Characteristics of rocks and rocks formation
2) Physical properties of minerals
3) Basic crystal structures and their significance in mineral identification.
4) How to distinguish between igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks.
Activities may be used in conjunction with one another, or they can stand alone. Do the activities as individual lessons or set them up in station format and have a great big classroom geology event! Complete, easy-to-follow lesson plans and handout masters are provided.
All interested classrooms in a particular school building are asked to coordinate their schedules and share the kit. Loan periods are flexible. Contact the Extension office to make your kit reservations.
Teachers are responsible for kit transportation to and from the Extension office.
