Earth Day is Every Day

"The Incredible Edible Landfill"

Grade Levels: 3-5

Earth Day presentations have been a favorite among classrooms for the past several years. Topics rotate such that 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms in the same building can participate annually without the risk of hearing the same topic twice.

The year's presentation, "The Incredible Edible Landfill," will take a close look at how landfills are constructed to meet EPA guidelines, consider why one wants landfills in their backyards, and discuss the importance of recycling as a means of slowing the fill rate in landfills. A fun, hands-on activity will reinforce the layers of the landfill. Presentations will be led by Extension and Ogle County Soil & Water Conservation District staff and will last approximately 50 minutes.

Call the Extension office to reserve a date and time for your classroom presentation. Then, complete the appropriate sections of the accompanying registration form and return it.

If more than one teacher in your building is interested in doing this program, please coordinate dates and times with other teachers before calling. Registrations will be accepted beginning at 8 a.m. on January 9. Cost for this program is $5 per classroom.
