Family Nutrition Program

FNP

Each month the Family Nutrition Program (FNP) provides information on different topics that focus on dietary quality, healthy lifestyles, food safety, and food budgeting. FNP is funded with Food Stamp Administrative funds by the Food and Nutrition Service of the U. S. Department of Agriculture.

Participants in the Moultrie-Douglas program include families with young children, school-aged youth, retired adults, single parents and people moving from welfare to work. FNP also collaborates with community agencies such as W.I.C., Head Start, Moultrie County Health Department, Douglas County Health Department and both county Family Community Resource Centers. Our programs are also present in local schools, libraries, community and senior centers, grocery stores and food pantries.

In 2006-2007 FNP collaborated with the agencies listed below, to deliver quality programming:

  • Local senior centers and peace meal sites to provide monthly nutrition lessons to 398 senior citizens.
  • Moultrie and Douglas County Health Departments to provide pre-natal and infant nutrition information to 212 young mothers through the county W.I.C. programs.
  • County pre-schools to teach 218 preschool children about fruits, vegetables, and dairy foods that would make them grow "taller", "stronger" and "smarter".
  • Arcola Elementary School to teach 44 elementary students to make healthy after-school snacks.
  • Area grain elevators to provide food safety lessons during fall harvest to 308 farm families.
  • Moultrie and Douglas County Family Community Resource Centers to provide monthly newsletters and commodity cookbooks for 386 families.
  • County food pantries to provide recipes, food safety and food budgeting tips to over 500 patrons who will use them to stretch their food supplies.
