Congratulations to Nancy Simpson!
Nancy has dedicated 39 years of her life serving as club leader of the Camargo Champs in Douglas County. Her continued presence year after year, patience, and experience has encouraged confidence and leadership in generations of 4-Hers and youth, including her own children and now five of her grandchildren. Community service has always been a top priority with her and her club members, and together they hold fundraisers to help support many worthwhile causes and organizations.
Nancy also has a passion for raising and showing pygmy goats. She has been the superintendent of the goat show at the Moultrie-Douglas 4-H Fair, as well as a judge for many different general project areas. She is also heavily involved in the Illinois State Fair Pygmy Goat Show where she shares her knowledge with many more youth outside of her club and county.
Illinois Earns 2nd Place at National 4-H Forestry Invitational
Illinois placed second among the 14 state teams that participated in the 30th annual National 4-H Forestry Invitational from Sunday, July 26, through Thursday, July 30. Teams from Alabama and Louisiana placed first and third, respectively.
At the Invitational, 4-H members compete for overall team and individual awards in several categories. Events included a forestry written exam, tree identification, tree measurement, compass and pacing, insect and disease identification, topographic map use, the forestry bowl and forest evaluation.
The National 4-H Forestry Invitational recognizes the top ten high scoring individuals at the awards banquet:
- Mollie Kresin tied for 5th place with 433.5 points out of 500.
- Dylan Walker placed 8th with 432.5 points out of 500.
- Shannon Breen placed 10th with 425 point out of 500.
The invitational was held at West Virginia University Jackson's Mill State 4-H Camp and Conference Center near Weston, West Virginia. The Farm Credit System and the Cooperative Extension Service sponsored the event.
Illinois was represented by Shannon Breen, Mollie Kresin, and Dylan Walker of Tuscola, and Mark McKown of Sullivan. The team was coached by David Shiley.
This event is sponsored by the Farm Credit Systems. The Illinois team trip expenses were paid for by the Farm Credit Systems and the Illinois 4-H Foundation. We thank both organizations for their donations and making this trip possible.
