The Jim Burrus Farm was the site of the 2003 Area Beef Cattle Field Day held August 20th. The family operates a livestock and grain farm with commercial cow-calf herd of 55 head of brood cows and runs a backgrounding operation. The operation utilizes both fall and spring calving with this being one of the topics presented that day. Management Intensive Grazing has been used on the operation for a number of years. The use of perennial ryegrass along with improved species of cool season and legumes has provided for excellent performance. An extensive water system allows water to be piped to the various paddocks. An outstanding set of University and industry speakers covered a number of topics including those used in the various operations on the farm. A special thanks is extended to the Jim Burrus Family for serving as host and allowing us to see their facilities for this educational program.
