If you are interested an applying for the $500 Monroe County Extension & 4HEducation Foundation Scholarship, please pick up an application ASAP! Completed applications are due in the Extension Office by Friday, April 11, 2008.
* Volunteers are shining examples of ways to give back to the community.
* During National Volunteer Week take the time to thank not only your 4-H Leader, but all those who share their time and expertise to make events and activities possible for you.
* Thank those who volunteer in your life at school, at church, in the community, at sporting events and in any of the other activities in which you participate.
* Special thanks to all of our 4-H Community Club Leaders. You make our program possible and we all appreciate the time and effort you provide to the 4-H program.
* If you plan to participate in the State Junior Horse Show July 22 - 27, you need to have your horse lease papers or horse ownership papers on file at the Extension Office by 4:00 p.m., Thursday, May 1, 2008.
* Please remember that a premises identification number is needed for the location where each horse entered has been fed and cared for. You may not exhibit without this number.
* Keep in mind that these forms require pictures of your horse so please PLAN AHEAD!
* Be sure to turn in papers on ALL animals that you are even considering taking to State Fair. If we do not have papers on an animal by the May 1, deadline you cannot enter them in classes at the State Fair. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!
* State Fair Premium Books and entry forms will again be available online. The website is www.illinoisstatefair.info. If you do not have internet access please feel free to stop by the Extension Office to use one of the available computers.
This public speaking contest is open to all 4-H members. Members are invited to prepare and deliver a presentation that relates to a project in which they are enrolled.
Your presentation should fit into one of the following categories:
* Formal Speech – a speech presented without visual aids. A formal speech is given to inform, persuade, or entertain. The speech should be 4 – 6 minutes in length.
* Illustrated Speech– a speech presented for the same purposes as a Formal Speech, but with the use of charts, pictures, slides, models, etc. The speech should also be 4 – 6 minutes in length.
* Demonstration– a demonstration is putting words into action. You choose a topic and show how to do something while explaining the process. The demonstration can be on any topic and should be 8 – 10 minutes in length.
* Oral Interpretation – an oral interpretation is presenting words written by someone else. It can be a poem, short play, or inspirational piece. The presentation can be done by an individual or team and should be 4 – 6 minutes in length.
* Original Works– a presentation of a play, poem, or inspirational piece written by the 4-H member. The presentation should be 4 – 6 minutes in length.
* Extempore speaking– for an extempore speech, you will choose 1 of 3 topics on contest day. Then you'll have 45 minutes to prepare your speech. You will then present your speech to the audience. Your speech should be 4 – 6 minutes in length.
* Food Demonstrations – Individual or team presentation.
Some ideas you might consider are;
Prepare your favorite salad Save money by comparing cost
Practice kitchen safety Prepare an after school snack
***Monroe County Farm Bureau Women's Committee sponsors a monetary award to any 4-H member using a corn product in their food demonstration.
(Be sure that your demonstration is in some way related to a project in which you are enrolled.)

* Visit the Air & Space Museum @ Parks Airport in Cahokia, IL
* Tour the Boeing Prologue Room, St. Louis, MO
* Participate in a Simulated Space Mission & a rocket launch at the Challenger Learning Center in St. Louis, MO
* Participants will stay on the campus of University of Missouri, St. Louis
* Participants will also enjoy a lunch at Oliver's on the Runway, in Cahokia, and dinner at Fitz's Root Beer along with a visit to the Walk of Famein UniversityCity
Cost for the camp is $160 per camper
Fee includes transportation from Marion, Mount Vernon or Fairview Heights by coach bus, lodging, meals, and program materials.
Space is limited to the first 45 youth who register. 4-H Membership is not required.

Academy Information
Five different academies are being offered – each providing 15 hours of interactive activities and study in a specific field of interest. Space is limited – each academy has set a maximum number of youth delegates they will accept. Some have also placed a high school level restriction on their academy. Spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
2008 Academy Offerings
Aerospace Engineering Academy In this hands-on Aerospace Engineering Academy, delegates will conduct experiments in rocket propulsion, flight mechanics, and fluid dynamics. You'll have the opportunity to design a spacecraft with a mission to Mars, and explore your creativity in our "What Would MacGyver Do?" challenge. 20 delegates maximum.
Applied Health Sciences Academy (Limited to incoming juniors and seniors) Explore methods and engage in activities to help others live better, healthier, and more meaningful lives. From audiology to physical therapy; health planning to health education; recreational activities to sports management; athletic training to medicine to speech pathology – delegates in this academy will experience hands-on activities and become familiar with what this Academy and College has to offer. 25 delegates maximum.
Horticulture Academy Experience the many facets of horticulture from the traditional to today's trends; hear from people in the profession, and best of all – experience hands-on activities including plant propagation, flower arranging, and more. Several activities will be outdoors; off-site field trips may be included. Horticulture is contagious. Catch the enthusiasm and become a little 'greener!' 12 delegates maximum.
Leadership Academy Socialize with new friends as you focus on communication skills, team-building, goal-setting and new partnerships. Individual and group challenges will enhance your influences as an effective leader. Immerse yourself in this diverse experience to prepare you for future leadership roles. 100 delegates maximum.
Veterinary Medicine Academy(Limited to incoming juniors and seniors) Veterinarians have a strong interest and ability in science. They enjoy working with people, as well as animals. Take a step into the world of veterinary medicine and see what veterinary school is like, learn about the different aspects of veterinary medicine and more. Delegates in this academy will learn about the science of veterinary medicine; the biology of skin; anatomy; immunology; bacteriology; parasitology; wildlife medicine, large animal medicine, agro-terrorism; and more. Participate in clinical equine rounds, streak and read bacteriology slides; learn how to suture a wound; tag along with University of Illinois staff veterinarians and so much more. 25 delegates maximum.
