4-H Afterschool Leader

After School 4-H Club Leader

Purpose: To provide overall leadership to an after-school 4-H group which meets at a local school as part of an after-school program; to provide leadership for the structure, content, and operation of the club, in cooperation with University of Illinois Extension- McLean County and the McLean County 4-H program.

Success Criteria: Club goals set by leaders and members are met. Members actively participate in club activities. Club officers are elected and perform effectively in leadership roles. Operational and managerial functions of the club are carried out effectively.

Time Required: 5-8 hours a month.

Responsibilities:

Implement club organization:

  • Set annual goals.
  • Meet regularly (at least once a month).
  • Recruit new members and apply for club recognition.
  • Coordinate enrollment efforts.
  • Help members select projects.
  • Help members elect officers.
  • Assist McLean County Extension staff in training and support of officers.
  • Assist officers to carry out their duties and learn new skills.

Provide a system for support of youth and adult volunteer leaders:

  • Recruit new youth and adult participants.
  • Share the responsibilities among club families.
  • Assist in the volunteer screening procedures for volunteer roles within the club.
  • Provide orientation for new volunteers in the club.
  • Help volunteers plan and implement learning experiences with 4-H members and their families.

Maintain communication within the club, and between the After School 4-H Club and McLean County Extension unit by:

  • Disseminating information in the club
  • Maintaining regular contact with McLean County Extension staff
  • Attending training and keeping up-to-date on unit programs
  • Reporting enrollment information and other requested data to the unit Extension staff

Target Dates: Minimum of monthly club meetings.

Resources Available:

  • Support and assistance from other leaders, including a 4-H Mentor Leader
  • Support and assistance from parents and older teens
  • Orientation, guidance, and support from McLean County Extension Youth Development Staff
  • Printed 4-H materials for members and leaders
  • 4-H supplies from National 4-H Supply Service
