George Holder Scholarship
HISTORY OF THE AWARD:
The George E. Holder 4-H Scholarship is given by the Elizabeth Davis Holder Foundation held at the University of Illinois Foundation. The scholarship has been offered for the McLean County 4-H program to honor college students (present/past 4-H members from McLean County) enrolled in their second year at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. George Holder (University of Illinois, Class of 1927), a McLean County native and farmer, began his family farming business in the late 1930's and continued active participation until his death in 2000 at the age of ninety-five years. He enjoyed a lifelong interest in innovative ways of farming, especially corn hybridization.
The gifts in honor of Mr. Holder are provided through the family foundation he established with his wife, Elizabeth Davis Holder, who preceded him in death. The awards are given to encourage students to continue their education beyond high school by awarding cash scholarship grants. One recipient will receive a $1200 scholarship. To receive this award is both an honor and a financial aid to the recipient.
