FAQ...Frozen Canned Goods

Q: I have canned goods I left in the car over night. Is it ok to go ahead and eat the food if I prepare it right away?

A: NEVER use frozen canned foods.

With the expanding and contracting of the frozen food the seams in the can have been stressed and weakened. Don't take a chance. Air most likely will be allowed to come in contact with the food and contaminate it allowing bacteria to grow. It could be unsafe to consume. Don't ever assume you "could just cook the bacteria out". You can cook some problems out but not ALL problems. When bacteria produce toxins this can be deadly.

The food should not be eaten if the can has been frozen.

FROZEN HOME CANNED FOOD

Q: Ok... so how about frozen home canned food?

A: Be cautious of frozen home canned food sealed in glass jars. There is a good possibility the jar has broken when frozen, so check the jar closely. Dispose of glass jar and food if broken.

If the jar is not broken, check the seal. Dispose of food if the seal is broken.

Even if the jar and seal are not broken, the quality of the frozen food is going to be poor.

To be safe, and considering the poor quality, I would not recommend the frozen home canned food be used. If it is used, boil all vegetables 10 minutes.

All home canned starchy vegetables, like lima beans, squash, and pumpkin and meat, fish and poultry should be boiled 20 minutes.
