Programs on Healthy Snacks continued ...

H.C.E. units are participating by choosing snacks from the recipe sheets to prepare and bring to the program. We are studying food ads from the newspaper, food labels, snack choice posters, and MyPyramid posters. Fun lesson! Due to my involvement with IEAFCS... I needed to solicit help from my nutrition assistants Pat and Judy to do three of the lessons for me. Sounds like they had a good time.

Activity in the week of September 18 – September 22, 2006

This week much time has been spent working alone and with Judy on finalizing the curriculum plan for the schools. We made final decisions on programming for October and November, and are in the process of putting our kits together. Not only will these be used at the elementary schools, but we will also use them at existing programs such as BHA, Unity and Western Ave.

I also am continuing work on the Speaker subcommittee for the Parent Enrichment group. We have a great line up this year and are excited about the upcoming Parent Expo.

At Unity we continue the month talking about healthy snack options. This week we did a "Healthy Moves" Apple & Peanut Butter spread which I demo'ed for the kids, then we put on our detective hats to work on another snack case.

Coming up . . . .

Next week I will be following up with schools I sent letters to. My goal will be to set a time to meet with K – 2 teachers to show them our plan and to set dates to go into the class room.

The first week of October, I will be back at BHA at the Hinshaw site. I also have a Fitness Fun Night at Pepper Ridge during this week.

From Judy Rollins, Nutrition Education Program Assistant

Week In Review I enjoyed meeting with the Western Avenue Seniors on Monday morning. We talked about healthy snacks. They are an enthusiastic bunch. I asked them what type of topics they would like to hear about in the coming months, and they all agreed that it wouldn't matter if I repeated something they had already heard about last year. As one of them commented, "We're seniors. We need to hear again and again." I worked with Pat at the office to begin putting together our curriculum for the fall. We have most of the materials ready. Next Week Pat and I have scheduled a meeting with Charlotte Talkington who works with the SHARE Program. We would like to coordinate some type of effort with her. Wednesday afternoon I will be presenting the nutrition program at Unity at 4:30.
