Nutrigenomics... Nutrition in-service telenet

Telenet was held at the Extension office on April 20, 2006

Nutrigenomics opens up a whole new world in helping people with their diet in relation to health! ( in treating obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, asthma, arthritis.) We're only in the beginning stages.

How nutrients affect an individual's genes. Genomics is the broader concept of genetics---moving beyond idea of "Genetic disease", "average person". Nutrigenetics is our individual differences---How an individual's genetic makeup affects nutrient requirements. Nutrigenomics is the individual diet/ gene interaction. How nutrients affect an individual's genes.

For example: with research in the Gene-diet (lifestyle interactions) we have found... no more one size fits all....

E4 most responsive to low fat diet, E2 least

E2 responds well to soluble fiber, E4 least

E4 least responsive to exercise, E2 best

E 4 does not increase HDL in response to alcohol, E2 and E3 appear to respond.

Spring 2006 with Physical Fitness and Healthy Beverage Choices

As spring approaches, physical fitness and healthy beverage choices to replenish our bodies are topics of interest. The youth groups I work with, Bloomington Housing Authority and Boys and Girls Club, are learning how to make healthy beverage choices when in a position to choose between one with vitamins and minerals or one with all sugar. Staying active will also be emphasized with easy and fun activities that the kids can engage in indoors or outdoors, especially on nice days.

My Western Avenue Seniors will become heart healthy this month as I introduce some diet related concepts that will be safe for their hearts.

I continue to offer nutrition tips, newsletters and recipes to food pantries and participating Share Programs to extend to individuals receiving their services in hopes that we can reach much of McLean County in our efforts to increase health and wellness. JF
