Home Sweet Home/Salvation Army needs Sleeping Bags!
I am emailing you in hopes that one (or hopefully a few) of you will be able to assist the community with this need. As we have already seen, the economy has taken a toll on individuals from across the country and as such we are seeing more and more individuals in need of services. As we also know, both shelters in town are current at capacity (in regards to males) and it is anticipated that this will only continue throughout the rest of the winter. In addition, PATH is very low on hotel funds and limiting who they assist because the state (and federal government) has not given them the much needed money in months. If that weren't enough, the communities supply of sleeping bags are currently at ZERO. In previous years if both shelters were full and PATH couldn't help, at least PATH / Safe Harbor would be able to provide a sleeping bag and warm places for the night. Because of all these circumstances, I am asking, hoping, praying that you (and your friends, family, organizations, clubs, church groups, etc...) can assist the community in accumulating a supply of sleeping bags. In the past, many individuals simply took multiple old blankets and created sleeping bags from them. They do not have to be bought, but the most important thing is that individuals in this community have something for the freezing nights ahead.
I ask that you please consider this request.
Thank you very much,
Danny Sherling

Help Mclean County win $400 by participating in 4-H National Youth Science Day
Receive $400 for your County 4-H Program
Thanks to generous support from John Deere, a $400 award will be presented to one county from each state (and one U.S. territory) with the highest number of individual Biofuel Blast results survey submissions between October 1st and October 30th, 2009. The awards can be used toward the implementation and promotion of science, engineering and technology programs in your county. After youth complete the experiment, make sure that they go to www.4-H.org/NYSD to fill out the survey so your county can compete for the award!
In addition, of those who submit their results through the Biofuel Blast experiment survey, five youth names will be randomly selected to receive a 32GB third generation iPod touch. The five youth will also be able to designate a 4-H club, school classroom, or youth organization to receive one of the pictured Fuel Cell Car Experiment kits. Click here for official drawing rules.

Youth Leaders for Literacy Grant
Youth Service America is partnering with the National Education Association to once again offer Youth Leaders for Literacy grants to children and youth, ages 5-25, who offer innovative ways to increase literacy skills and appreciation for reading among their peers. Youth can submit their applications through October 30, 2009.
Youth Leaders for Literacy will award 30 young people from across the U.S. each with $500 grants and $500 in books from the Pearson Foundation. Successful projects will be youth-led and address an established literacy need in the applicant's school or community. The projects will follow the framework of YSA's Semester of Service initiative, launching on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service in January and culminating on Global Youth Service Day, April 23-25. 4-H National Youth Science Day Kick-Off – October 3, Children's Discovery Museum, 9-12 am
On 4-H National Youth Science Day – October 7, 2009 – millions of young people across the U.S. will participate in a live demonstration of how organic materials can be converted to fuel to supply energy. McLean County will kick off National Youth Science day on Saturday, October 3 from 9:30 – 11:30 am. We are looking for 4-H clubs to volunteer to lead the science experiment with attendees at the museum during this time. A total of 10-15 youth volunteers and five adults are needed to assist in leading the experiment.
The experiment offers several activities to showcase how cellulose and sugars in plants can be used to create ethanol. The National Science Experiment will encourage a national youth debate to discuss the "best" biofuel based on experiment outcomes. Youth will be engaged before, during and after the experiment via several popular communication mechanisms and through the www.4-H.org web site. To download youth and facilitator guidebooks go to www.4-H.org/NYSD.
Please consider adding this activity to your list of leadership opportunities for your members. Interested members need to sign up with Theresa techamb@illinois.edu no later than September 18 --- this Friday!

Do you have your 4-H records done? Started?
The end of the 4-H program year is very near and it's time to start on 4-H records!
There are two different types of 4-H records in Mclean County - My 4-H Project Record forms and County/State forms - Illinois 4-H Award Application.
Standards of Excellence & Achievement and the My 4-H Project Record form facts:
- All members receive a Standards of Excellence & Achievement form with their project books at the time of enrollment.
- Depending on the projects enrolled in, members will get ONE copy of the My 4-H Project Record form in EACH Award/Curriculum area.
- Example: If you enroll in horses, cats, clothing you will receive an Animal Science and a Home and Family form.
- These forms are available online for members to fill out and carry on from year to year. You do not have to use a new sheet or form each year if you are typing them on a computer. Just be sure to put the year down with new information.
- If several projects are taken spanning several curriculum areas members can CHOOSE to focus on a few Award/Curriculum areas so that they do not have to fill out a My 4-H Project Record form in each area.
- Example: If you are enrolled in visual arts, leadership, breads and cereals, food demonstration, beef, horses, horticulture and welding: You can CHOOSE to focus on Personal Development, Food, Nutrition and Health and Animal Science.
County/State Forms - Ilinois 4-H Award Application
The Illinois 4-H Award Application is all a member needs to apply for county and state awards in one or more specific award/curriculum areas. No other records will be used in selecting county and state award winners. The application covers the member's entire 4-H career. Suggested starting ages 12-14 years old.
This form can be downloaded here: http://tiny.cc/MDxnn

They are looking for 4-H members and/or Leaders to help us out. They would like to have weekly/biweekly meetings or workshops with the children. 4-H members need help with projects. 4-H Blogging...you CAN do it!
We are building excitement for 4-H Blogs! Would you or your 4-Hers be interested in learning how to use a blog at Heartland Community College in January/February in a computer lab, where you would work at your own machine to learn how to blog? I am willing to offer a class (or two) if there is enough interest. There may be a minimal cost per person, and participants would receive an hour of training on the blogspot.com website. You can learn to use the following sites:
A place for 4-H clubs to chat about what's going on in your club!
http://mclean4-hclubchatter.blogspot.com/
Current 4-H Fundraisers…what a great way for 4-Hers, volunteers & alumni to support 4-H fundraisers!

If you are interested, or know of someone interested – please send names to techamb@illinois.edu with names and email/phone numbers.

10 ways to Serve this holiday seasion!
Taken from the Youth Service America site: www.ysa.org
The holiday season is often one of joy and anticipation as children look forward to visiting relatives, eating sweets, and opening presents. However there are a multitude of ways that children benefit from giving the gift of joy to their communities – a gift doesn't cost a dime. Here are 10 simple and unique ways that children and their families can serve their communities:
1. Turn off the lights! – We use a lot of energy around the holiday seasons. Don't forget to turn off the decorative lights during the day or whenever you leave your home.
2. Invite a family to your home for the holidays – While donating food is always helpful, opening up your home to guests is a great way to spread joy and is much more personal. Invite them to join you in helping someone else.
3. Send holiday cards to the spouses and children of men and women in the military – We should never forget the sacrifices made by our enlisted men and women; but a homemade card for their families shows that we're thankful for their sacrifice as well.
4. Bake cookies for your neighbors – They may or may not be in need, but we don't always know the value our gifts bring to others; and that's okay.
5. Share your stories – Get your class to write and illustrate a short story and donate them to a neighboring school or a homeless shelter; it's a nice twist on the pen pal letter.
6. Listen to stories – Spend some time with your grandparents, or other senior citizens in your community, and listen to the stories they tell; they'll appreciate the company and you'll be surprised at their experiences.
7. Clear the way – Depending on your weather, volunteer to rake the leaves or shovel the snow at the home of an elderly neighbor.
8. Talk to a bell ringer – Even if you don't give money, ask the Salvation Army volunteers outside the mall or grocery store what they're doing; they will be thrilled to talk to you and may give you ideas about how you can serve your community.
9. Clean up – ask your teacher if he or she needs help cleaning up the classroom before winter break; they'll appreciate the opportunity to see their families a little earlier as well.
10. Think ahead – 2009 is almost here. Begin thinking about how you can help your community on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a national day of service on January 19, 2009, or by planning a project for Global Youth Service Day, April 24-26, 2009.

Radon Poster Contest
University of Illinois Extension along with the American Lung Association of Illinois, Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago, and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency Radon Program are partnering with the National Safety Council and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to sponsor the Illinois portion of the 2010 National Radon Poster Contest for youth ages 9-14.
