What "Wonderwise" is all about: Vet Detective activities were about vital signs. Campers learned how to take their temperature, respiration rate, and pulse then compared their findings to what is normal for children their age. Campers also compared their vitals to that of a cow and rabbit. After learning how to take their pulse the normal way, campers were each given a small piece of clay and a tooth pick. The toothpick was inserted into the clay and then the clay was positioned on their wrist where they had found their pulse. They could see the toothpick wiggle with each pulse. Very cool! Urban Ecologist activities included floating a paperclip to simulate a waterbug. Campers then added soil or detergent to create polluted water and to see the effect polluted water would have on the bugs. To conclude the activity, campers filtered their polluted water and attempted to once again float the waterbug. Space Geologist included an activity that studied the impact of meteors, the craters they form, and the ground matter thrown upon impact. Campers created a surface area to represent a section of land, campers then dropped objects into the surface area. Due to the impact of the items dropped, craters formed and excess ground matter was thrown out of the created surface area. Sea Otter Biologist activities included learning the concept of marine animal tracking and why it is important for animals to be tracked. Campers teamed up - one to track and one to record. The tracker was blind-folded and was asked to point toward the sound that they heard (simulated click of a radio-tracking device on a sea otter). The recorder documented where the tracker pointed based on islands laid out in the room as well as directionals. (be sure to check out our pictures!)
