Department H - HOME & FAMILY

State Fair - Any 4-Her, 10 years of age by September 1 of current 4-H year or over may enter. Projects marked with asterisk (*) eligible for State Fair.

4-Hers must be present for judging on Wednesday, according to this schedule: (PLEASE BE PRESENT ONLY WHEN YOUR CLUB OR PROJECT IS SCHEDULED) Thank you!

1. The Home & Family Department include the following main subject projects: Health, Home Furnishings, Child Care, Intergenerational and Consumer Education.

2. The member is limited to one exhibit in each of the main topic exhibits, maximum for the department will be five (5) total exhibits.

3. All entries in Home & Family will be judged by the Danish or group system.

4. 4-Her must be present for interview with judge to receive ribbons, premiums, awards, and/or State Fair honors.

5. Posters for hanging should be no larger than 22" x 30".

6. All displays, except for Interior Design, are limited to 2' wide x 15" deep.

HOME FURNISHINGS

*2101 INTERIOR DESIGN - beginning - (Recommended for members with 1-3 years in project.) Entry can be from any one of the following groupings:

1. Wall Treatment - Poster showing the application of a decorative treatment for a wall (stenciling, rag rolling, etc.) used by the exhibitor. Treatment should cover approximately 1/2 of the board. Remain ing area of the board should include before/after photos, a picture story of the application, cost comparison, etc.

2. Three-dimensional surface accessory that will set on a table, dresser, or floor. Item must be made by the exhibitor. Include before & after photos of the space where the item is used in the room.

3. An item that has been recycled (significantly altered) by the member. Include photo of the item as used in the room. Include before & after photos of the space where the item is used in the room.

4. Wall hanging (2 or 3-dimensional), made by exhibitor. Include before & after photos of the space where the item is used in the room.

*2102 INTERIOR DESIGN - intermediate - (Recommended for members with 3-5 years in project.) Entry can be from any one of the following groupings.

1. Comparison shopping study of at least two items showing wants and needs, costs, use in overall de- sign plan, quality comparison, etc. and final selection made. May be displayed via poster or notebook.

2. Bedcover - May include quilt, comforter, bedspread, dust ruffle, pillow sham, canopy, etc. made by exhibitor. Include before & after photos of the space where the item is used in the room.

3. Window Treatment - May include curtains, draperies, shade, shutter, etc. made by exhibitor. Include before & after photos of the space where the item is used in the room.

*2103 INTERIOR DESIGN - advanced- (Recommended for members with over 5 years in project.) Select one problem such as storage, unusual or odd-sized window, need for better lighting, privacy, or an invention or idea that solves energy or water problem. Show the steps used to solve the problem and the final product. Use pictures, samples, drawings, etc. to tell the story. Display in a notebook or on poster board. If an item was made by the exhibitor to solve the problem, include that item in the display.

Include before and after photos in display. Displays illustrating a general "redecorating" of a room are NOT appropriate for this exhibit. OR Exhibit one item of refinished furniture. Include before & after photos of the space where the item is used in the room. Photo should be mounted. Include a description of the steps taken to refinish the item.

*2104 CLOVER CHALLENGE: INTERIOR DESIGN - This class is limited to 15 to 18 year olds who are enrolled in Clover Challenge for this project area. Exhibit a display illustration the Clover Challenge area explored. This could include anything NOT covered in the project books, including but not limited to career exploration, a major "before and after" room redecorating project, drafting skills, interior design models, etc. The completed 4-H Clover Challenge Agreement must be presented with the exhibit.

CHILD CARE

for State Fair eligibility - Child Development exhibits are limited to a 2' wide x 15" deep space. (Standard display boards fit into this size limitation)

2105 CHILD DEVELOPMENT I - Exhibit one of the following options from project book (Growing on My Own). 1. My Learning Box filled with things that help you learn and have fun. On a note card or paper, explain how you have used the box. OR 2. Prepare a choke-tube tester display labeled with toys that are "safe" and "not safe." On a note card or paper, explain why the toys are safe or not safe for young children and how others can test toys for safety.

4-Hers enrolled in Child Development II may chose ONE of the following exhibit opportunities.

*2106 CHILD DEVELOPMENT II - Make an exhibit that includes the following three items that would be appropriate for a child of a specific age selected by the 4-Her:

1. A toy made by the 4-Her

2. A song or game

3. A story or story book that would be appropriate for a specific age of child. On a note card or page of paper, indicate the age of child and how the items fit into the interests, abilities and safety consideration of the age of the child.

*2107 CHILD DEVELOPMENT II - TOYS & ACTIVITIES - Prepare a display of 6-9 toys and/or activities (at least one being made by the 4-Her). Include 2 items for each of the following 3 age groups:

1. Infant/Toddler

2. Pre-School

3. School Age

On a note card or page of paper, for each toy and activity indicate the age of the child and how that item fits into their interests, abilities and safety considerations. The 4-Her should be prepared to discuss this information at the time of conference judging.

*2108 CHILD DEVELOPMENT II - SAFETY PRACTICES - Prepare a poster or display to illustrate one of the following safety practices you would follow as a sitter:

Toy Safety Food Safety Fire Safety Outdoor Safety

Kitchen Safety Basic First Aid Poison Prevention

*2109 CHILD DEVELOPMENT III - Exhibit one or more of the following items developed by the member form the Level 3 project book, Growing in Communities: a child care career game; a display representing a community service activity; a teaching plan for use in a child care setting (2-4 hour time span); OR a plan for neighborhood Olympics activity. The member should provide a thorough explanation of their exhibit during the conference judging.

*2110 CLOVER CHALLENGE: CHILD CARE - This class is limited to 15 to 18 year olds who are enrolled in Clover Challenge for this project area. Exhibit a display illustration the Clover Challenge area explored. This could include anything NOT covered in the project books, including but not limited to career exploration, a daycare building design, developing or leading a community children's activity or event, etc.. The completed Illinois 4-H Clover Challenge Agreement must be presented with the exhibit.

Family & Intergenerational

*2111 INTERGENERATIONAL - WALK IN MY SHOES - Individual - Exhibit a display relating to an activity completed in the project. Be prepared to discuss the activity and the results of the activity.

*2112 CLOVER CHALLENGE: WALK IN MY SHOES (individual only) - This class is limited to 15 to 18 year olds who are enrolled in Clover Challenge for this project area. Exhibit a display illustration the Clover Challenge area explored. This could include anything NOT covered in the project books, including but not limited to career exploration, a weekly activity plan for elder care, giving leadership to a major intergenerational activity or event, etc. The completed Illinois 4-H Clover Challenge Agreement must be presented with the exhibit.

Health

*2113 KEEPING FIT & HEALTHY 1, FIRST AID IN ACTION - First Aid in Action - Exhibit a family First Aid Kit and cards prepared by the exhibitor.

*2114 KEEPING FIT & HEALTHY 2, STAYING HEALTHY - Exhibit a "smarts" project as explained in the project manual. Project should be designed/prepared by the exhibitor.

*2115 KEEPING FIT & HEALTHY 3, KEEPING FIT - Exhibit a Fitness File OR make a display on credible information about supplements and performance enhancers.

Consumer Education

*2116 FINANCIAL CHAMPIONS 1 - Create a personal financial portfolio: an organized system that may included activities from the Money Fundamentals 4-H manual, such as needs vs. wants, goals, budget, etc. Members in the second or third year of this project book should add to their portfolio each year. Photocopies of the completed activities from the 4-H manual (or the actual manual) should be included in the display.

*2117 FINANCIAL CHAMPIONS 2 - Create display that promotes good spending or investing practices OR compares good verse poor spending or investing practices. Photocopies of the completed activities from the 4-H manual (or the actual manual) should be included in the display.

*2118 CONSUMER SAVVY I - The Consumer in Me - Exhibit a display based on a purchase made this year. Incorporate at least two activities from the project manual that illustrate that your purchase was well planned and researched.

*2119 Consumer Savvy II - Consumer Wise - Exhibit a display illustrating use of the six-step decision-making process in making a wise purchase. Incorporate at least two other learning activities from the project manual used to help you make a wise decision.

*2120 Consumer Savvy III - Consumer Roadmap - Exhibit a display based on what you learned from at least one activity from the project manual.

*2121 Be the E! - Exhibit a binder portfolio that includes the results of at least two completed activities from each year exhibitor has been enrolled in the project. Completed activities from previous years should be included. Use of page protectors is recommended.
