NATURAL RESOURCES & ENVIRONMENT

State Fair - Any 4-H'er, 10 years of age by September 1 of current 4-H year or over may enter. Projects with asterisk (*) may be chosen for State Fair.

GENERAL N.R. & ENVIRONMENT RULES

1. All exhibits must be in place and properly displayed between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. prior to judging.

2. NO exhibits will be accepted after judging begins.

3. All exhibits will be interview judged on Tuesday, according to assigned times at check-in. 4-Her must be present for interview with judge to receive ribbons, premiums, awards and/or State Fair honors.

4. Table top displays should be limited to approximately 2' wide x 15" deep and posters 22" x 28", unless stated otherwise in class description. Electricity and water are NOT available for these displays.

5. Size of exhibit should relate appropriately to the # of specimens on display for a specific class - Geology & Entomology.

6. No guns or ammunition are permitted as exhibits (or parts of exhibits). They are not permitted on the fairgrounds at any time.

7. No live animals are permitted as exhibits (or parts of exhibits) in this department.

ENTOMOLOGY

Rules for pinning & labeling insects are available from the Extension Office or on the Internet at www.4-h.uiuc.edu/projects/onlineref.html

*2002 ENTOMOLOGY LEVEL 1 - Limited to members enrolled in Entomology I project. Exhibit fifteen (15) or more species representing four (4) or more orders. Collection must be accurately labeled. Exhibitors must also include the Entomology I project manual, Creepy Crawlies with at least one completed activity for each year enrolled. Bring manual for conference judging time.

*2003 ENTOMOLOGY LEVEL II - Limited to members enrolled in Entomology II. First year exhibit thirty (30) or more species representing eight (8) or more orders. Collection must be accurately labeled. Exhibitors must also include the Entomology II project manual, What's Bugging You with at least one completed activity for each year enrolled. Bring manual for conference judging time.

*2004 ENTOMOLOGY LEVEL III - Limited to members enrolled in the Entomology III project. Exhibit sixty (60) or more species representing twelve (12) or more orders. Collection must be accurately labeled. Exhibitors must also include the Ent. III project manual, Dragons, Houses & Other Flies with at least one completed activity for each year enrolled. Bring manual for conference judging time.

*2005 ENTOMOLOGY DISPLAY, OTHER - Exhibit any activity or display from the Entomology project books that does not fit into classes 2002-2004.

*2006 CLOVER CHALLENGE: ENTOMOLOGY - This class is limited to 15 to 18 year olds who are enrolled in Clover Challenge for this project area. Exhibit a display illustrating the Clover Challenge area explored. This could include anything NOT covered in the project books, including but not limited to career exploration, pest management plan for farm or production facility, etc.. The completed Illinois 4-H Clover Challenge Agreement must be presented with the exhibit.

FORESTRY

*2007 EXPLORING THE FOREST - Exhibit any product or display made in the project unit.

*2008 Forests of Fun 1: Follow the Path - Exhibit any product or display illustrating an activity from the book.

*2009 Forests of Fun 2: Reach for the Canopy - Exhibit any product or display illustrating an activity from the book.

*2010 Forests of Fun 3: Explore the Deep Woods - Exhibit any product or display illustrating an activity from the book.

*2011 CLOVER CHALLENGE: FORESTRY - This class is limited to 15 to 18 year olds who are enrolled in Clover Challenge for this project area. Exhibit a display illustrating the CC area explored. This could include anything NOT covered in the project books, including but not limited to careers, logging, design a forestry preserve, etc. The completed IL 4-H Clover Challenge Agreement must be presented.

GEOLOGY

ALL LEVELS OF GEOLOGY USE THE SAME MANUAL, WHAT ON EARTH - GEOLOGY STUDY GUIDE.

*2012 GEOLOGY, Pebble Pups I - Display eight (8) to nineteen (19) rocks or mineral specimens with a minimum of three (3) minerals in the collection. Collection may include duplications that show variations. Label collection and note where found. Collection should be in box no larger than 18" x 24".

*2013 GEOLOGY, Pebble Pups II - Display twenty (20) to twenty-nine (29) rocks or mineral specimens with a minimum of seven (7) minerals in the collection. Collection may include duplications that show variations. Label collection and note where found.

*2014 GEOLOGY, Rock Hounds I - Display thirty (30) to forty (40) rocks or mineral specimens with a minimum of ten (10) minerals in the collection. Rocks should include at least three (3) igneous, two (2) metamorphic, and three (3) sedimentary groups. Label collection and note where found.

*2015 GEOLOGY, Rock Hounds II - Display no more than 50 specimens that have been selected to illustrate a specific theme of the exhibitor's choosing. Be creative. Sample categories could include (but are not limited to): industrial minerals and their uses: a specific rock group and the variety that occurs in the group, including some minerals that occur in that environment: select fossils traced through the geological ages; mineral and their crystal habits; rocks and minerals used in the lapidary arts. Exhibitor should be able to discuss their theme and choice of specimens related to the theme with the judge.

*2016 CLOVER CHALLENGE: GEOLOGY - This class is limited to 15 to 18 year olds who are enrolled in Clover Challenge for this project area. Exhibit a display illustrating the Clover Challenge area explored. This could include anything NOT covered in the project books, including but not limited to career exploration, important historical geological sites, etc.. The completed Illinois 4-H Clover Challenge agreement must be presented with the exhibit.

Natural Resources

*2018 CAMPING OUTDOOR ADVENTURE 1, 2, or 3 - Exhibit any product or display illustrating an activity completed from the project manual.

*2019 Natural Resources I - Exhibit any item developed from the project book, Step Into Nature. Be able to explain the importance of and concept behind the project exhibit.

*2020 Natural Resources II - Exhibit any item developed from the project book, Explore the Natural World. Be able to explain the importance of and concept behind the project exhibit.

*2021 Natural Resources III - Exhibit any item developed from the project book, Blaze the Trail. Be able to explain the importance of and concept behind the project exhibit.

*2022 CLOVER CHALLENGE: NATURAL RESOURCES - This class is limited to 15 to 18 year olds who are enrolled in Clover Challenge for this project area. Exhibit a display illustrating the Clover Challenge area explored. This could include anything NOT covered in the project books, including but not limited to career exploration, organization and facilitation of county, regional, or state Natural Resource related activity (Earth Day, road clean-up, etc.), design a campground for a state park, etc.. The completed Illinois 4-H Clover Challenge Agreement must be presented with the exhibit.

*2023 SPORTSFISHING LEVEL 1- Exhibit a product or display made to complete an activity in the Take the Bait project manual. This could include but is not limited to, display on: different types of fishing tackle, identifying different baits and their uses (no actual bait) or identifying the anatomy of a fish. For safety reasons, lures must be placed in a plastic case.

*2024 SPORTSFISHING LEVEL 2- Exhibit a product or display made to complete an activity in the Reel in the Fun project manual. This could include, but is not limited to, displays on: different types of knots or rigs and their use: a collection of fishing lures, labeled with their use; or information on preparing and cooking fish (not recipes). For safety reasons, lures must be placed in plastic case.

*2025 SPORTSFISHING LEVEL 3- Exhibit a product or display made to complete an activity in the Cast into the Future project manual. This could include, but is not limited to, displays on: making artificial flies and lures; researching effects of water temperature; sportsfishing careers; or identifying insects that fish eat. For safety reasons, lures must be placed in a plastic case.

2026 - Wildlife 1 - Exhibit a product or display developed from the project manual.

*2027 - Wildlife 2 - Exhibit any activity developed from the project manual. (Ex. create a display of the life history of an animal.) Within the exhibit explain the importance of and concept behind the exhibit.
