Master Gardeners receive more than 60 hours of in-depth training from University of Illinois educators and specialists. The information is presented practically; yet making sure it is unbiased and research-based. Classes included basic botany, vegetables, tree fruits, small fruits, insects, diseases, soils, fertilizers and ornamentals such as trees and flowers. The Master Gardener program is a volunteer program which provides an extensive course in horticulture in exchange for a donation of volunteer hours to share your gardening knowledge with others through extension-sponsored activities. Volunteers can answer questions from gardeners or they may man an exhibit at a local gardening center. Some Master Gardeners speak at local programs or do media work. It is possible for volunteers to give their time to school programs.
