LGIEN History
University of Illinois Extension has a long history of work with local officials; indeed, from the beginning Extension has been the point of contact between communities and the University of Illinois. Through programming in community development, Extension staff has worked since the mid-60's with local decision-makers in programs developed to improve delivery of local services, develop interagency coordination, impact local economic development, and increase the capacity of local officials to serve their constituents.
In 1981, the Community Information and Education Service (CIES) was funded by the Kellogg Foundation. CIES partners included U of I Office of Continuing Education and Public Service, Cooperative Extension, and five central Illinois Community Colleges. Staff from these institutions worked with local community leaders to develop educational programs for decision-makers. When the program received continuing funding, Continuing Education and CES were the two partners; the second phase was targeted to local government education.
