Lee County Extension Foundation

Mission & Purpose

The purpose of Lee County Extension Foundation is to serve as a resource to help meet the financial commitments needed for the educational programming of Lee County Extension. Extension services include:

  • 16 4-H clubs for ages 8-18
  • 7 Clover Bud Clubs for ages 5-7
  • 400 youth participating in traditional 4-H club activities including camps, fairs, project pool
  • 80 4-H club leaders generating hundreds of volunteer hours to assist our youth.
  • 3,796 youth involved through the 4-H School Enrichment Programs (health fairs, character education, and earth day programs)
  • 1300 youth active in the Outdoor Stewardship Days (hosted by Lee Co. Soil & Water)

A recently developed program in Lee County is The Breakfast Clubbies: a four-week lesson of the Extension Family Nutrition Program that goes into the local schools and focuses on the value of breakfast. Through videos, activities and group discussions, students learn to prepare their own breakfast, see what people from around the globe eat for breakfast, conduct science experiments, and exercise.

Each year from April to September, Master Gardener volunteers, educated through Lee County Extension in horticulture, answer homeowner phone calls regarding lawn and garden questions. They are also involved in community horticulture projects such as 4-H workshops, Dixon Petunia Festival and community garden projects. During the past few years, Lee Co. Master Gardeners have been recognized by the state for their work in coordination the plant sale, garden party and beautification of the Lee Co. 4-H Center & Fairgrounds.

More about the Lee County Extension Foundation

History

In 1988, the Farm Progress Show found its home near West Brooklyn. During the event, several 4-H clubs staffed a food stand and donated the profits to the Lee County Cooperative Extension. As a result, the decision was made to establish a foundation to support Extension in Lee County. Hours of intense work by interested persons culminated in the formation of the Lee County Extension Foundation.

Historically, Lee County Extension has been funded through federal, state, and local sources. Even with increased competition for government funds, Lee County Extension has maintained many established programs, such as 4-H, and created priorities to address the needs and interests of Lee County citizens.
