Natural Resources & Environment

Superintendent Vicki Heath

Exhibits due in Exhibit Hall II Between 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Thursday, July 9

Oral Judging starts at 1:00 p.m.

1. Oral judging is MANDATORY.

2. Space is limited, especially at State Fair.

3. Electricity and water are NOT available for these displays.

4. Read carefully and make sure to do a complete job on your entry.

5. Table-top displays should be limited to 2' wide and 15" deep and maximum

poster size is 22" x 30," unless specifically noted in the project area.

Natural Resources

Natural Resources I - Exhibit any item developed from the project book, Step Into Nature. Be able to explain the importance of and concept behind the project exhibit.

Natural Resources II -Exhibit any item developed from the project book, Explore the Natural World. Be able to explain the importance of and concept behind the project exhibit.

Natural Resources III - Exhibit any item developed from the project book, Blaze The Trail. Be able to explain the importance of and concept behind the project exhibit.

County Award

Outstanding Natural Resources Exhibitor Award

This award will be presented to the exhibitor who had the most high quality or to an exhibitor who had one particular "outstanding" project.

Outdoor Adv. I, II & III - Exhibit a display illustrating an activity completed from the project manual.

Wildlife I- Exhibit any activity developed from the project manual. (Example: a bird feeder, including a chart recording what birds visited the feeder.

Wildlife II - Exhibit any activity developed from the project manual. (Ex. Create a display of the life history of an animal.) Within the exhibit and/or the report, explain the importance of and concept behind the exhibit.

Entomology

Size and number of exhibit cases should relate appropriately to the number of insects being displayed for a specified class. Cases should be no deeper than 4". Exhibitors should note that Entomology exhibits may be placed UPRIGHT for display. Rules for pinning and labeling insects are available from your local Extension Office or on the Internet at www.4-h.uiuc. edu/projects/onlineref.html.

Entomology, I - Limited to exhibitors enrolled in the Entomology I project. Exhibit 15 or more species representing four or more orders. Collection must be accurately labeled. Exhibitors must also include the Entomology I project manual Creepy Crawlies, with at least one completed activity for each year enrolled. The project manual must be attached to one of the exhibitor's cases. Member should be able to discuss skills learned.

Entomology, II - Limited to exhibitors enrolled in the Entomology II project. Exhibit 30 or more species representing eight or more orders. Collection must be accurately labeled. Exhibitors must also include the Entomology II project manual What's Bugging You, with at least one completed activity for each year enrolled. The project manual must be attached to one of the exhibitor's cases. Member should be able to discuss skills learned.

Entomology, III - Limited to exhibitors enrolled in the Entomology III project. Exhibit 60 or more species representing twelve or more orders. Collection must be accurately labeled. Exhibitors must also include the Entomology III project manual Dragons, Houses and Other Flies, with at least one completed activity for each year enrolled. The project manual must be attached to one of the exhibitor's cases. Member should be able to discuss skills learned.

Entomology Display, Other -- Exhibit any activity or display from the Entomology project books that does not fit into classes Entomology I, II or III.

Forestry

Table-top displays should fit into an area no larger than 2' wide and 15" deep. Posters should be no larger than 22" x 30."

Forests of Fun 1 (Follow the Path) - Exhibit any product or display illustrating an activity from the book.

Forests of Fun 2 (Reach for the Canopy) - Exhibit any product or display illustrating an activity from the book.

Forests of Fun 3 (Explore the Deep Woods)- Exhibit any product or display illustrating an activity from the book.

Geology

Size of exhibit should relate appropriately to the number of specimens being displayed for a specified class.

Pebble Pups I - Display 8-19 rocks and mineral specimens with three minerals in the collection. Collections may include duplications that show variations. Label collection and note where found.

Pebble Pups II - Display at least twenty (20), but no more than 29 rocks or mineral specimens with seven (7) minerals in the collection. Collection may include duplications that show variations. Label collection and note where found.

Rock Hound I - Display at least thirty (30), but no more than 40 rocks or mineral specimens with ten (10) minerals in the collection. Rocks should include at least three (3) igneous, two (2) metamorphic, and three (3) sedimentary groups. Label collection and note where found. Exhibitor should be able to discuss various aspects of geology with judge.

Rock Hound II - This level is for those who have successfully completed Rock Hound I. Display no more than 50 specimens that have been selected to illustrate a specific theme of the exhibitor's choosing. Be creative. Sample categories could include (but are not limited to): industrial minerals and their uses; a specific rock group and the variety that occurs in that group, including some minerals that occur in that environment; select fossils traced through the geologic ages; minerals and their crystal habits; rocks and minerals used in the lapidary arts. Exhibitor should be able to discuss their theme and choice of specimens related to the theme with the judge.

Sportfishing

Sportfishing I - Exhibit a product or display made to complete the activities in the Take The Bait project manual. This could include, but is not limited to, displays on: different types of fishing tackle, identifying different baits and their uses (no actual bait) or identifying the anatomy of a fish. For safety reasons, lures must be placed in a plastic case.

Sportfishing II - Exhibit a product or display made to complete the activities in the Reel in the Fun project manual. This could include, but is not limited to, displays on: different types of knots or rigs and their use; a collection of fishing lures, labeled with their use; or information on preparing and cooking fish (not recipes.). For safety reasons, lures must be placed in a plastic case.

Sportfishing III - Exhibit a product or display made to complete the activities in the Cast into the Future project manual. This could include, but is not limited to, displays on: making artificial flies and lures; researching effects of water temperature; sportfishing careers; or identifying insects that fish eat. For safety reasons, lures must be placed in a plastic case.
