Oral Judging to begin at 9:30 a.m.

RULES

A. All Exhibits should have been made in the current 4-H year, (Sept. 1, 2008 - Aug. 31st, 2009) by the exhibitor entered in Visual Arts. Exhibitors are encouraged to date their work. Artwork that is meant to be displayed on the floor or ground is restricted to 3' (width) x 3' (length). No height restriction is given.

B. Each Visual Arts Exhibitor may bring 1-3 Visual Arts projects to be shown at the fair. The exhibitor is not limited to one exhibit per media area. He/she may enter all three exhibits in the same area. (Example: Three entries in the "Chalk/Carbon/Pigment" Media Area)

C. Premiums will be paid on a maximum of three entries per exhibitor.

D. At the time of registration (8-9 a.m.), each exhibitor will show their entries and their designated media area cards. (The media areas are listed on the next page.)

E. A 3" x 5" card, should be attached securely to the back of each exhibit entered. The card will contain the following information: Name, Club, Date, Media Category, Design Source, and an answer to the question: "What did you learn from doing this exhibit?"

F. Design Sources = Where you got your project idea? Several Examples Include: picture, sketch, doodles, item from nature, and/or a written statement describing how you came up with your idea… Bring the item or a picture of the item (taken by the exhibitor) with you for judging and be prepared to explain it.

G. Articles exhibited should be from an ORIGINAL DESIGN created by the exhibitor.

H. THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE: Copyrighted or trademarked designs, Articles done using patterns or pictures from magazines as starting points for designs, Kits and preformed molds, Team or School logos, Stepping stones, and Scrapbooks. Combining parts of different pattern with the member's own ideas can result in an original design, but simply changing the color, pattern and/or size of a pattern does not make the design original. The only exception to this rule is an item that would meet the criteria of Heritage Arts.

I. An exhibit can be entered in only one class.

J. ORAL JUDGING will take place on Thursday, July 9th beginning at 9:30, in Exhibit Hall 1 (NW Corner). Judges will be available during that time to discuss exhibits with the exhibitors. All Judges will work together to decide Best of Show and State Fair winners. At Check-In each Exhibitor will receive a number and an estimated time to return to the Visual Arts Area.

K. Size Restriction: Visual Arts exhibits that need to be placed on the floor, may not take up more than 3 feet of space. Artwork that is meant to be hung or placed on a shelf is limited to a size of 30" high x 30" wide x 12" deep. Framed items not intended to be hung, should be noted as such.

L. ALL EXHIBITS MUST COME READY FOR DISPLAY. DRAWINGS AND PAINTINGS should be matted, framed, and preferable under glass with a sturdy hanging devise. (Wire is suggested.)(Exceptions include: Oil and Acrylic paintings which do not require glass.) The following exhibits require glass, acrylic, or some protective covering: Water Color, Pen and Ink, Chalk. MATS: There is no specific requirement for the type of mat used. Page 43 of the member's manual gives basic directions for a mat, but purchased, pre-cut mats are acceptable. (Mats are available at craft and discount stores.)

M. FOR STATE FAIR ELIGIBILITY: The exhibitor must be present for Conference Judging. The exhibitor must meet age requirements, (10 years old by Sept. 1, 2008).

N. Eight entries from Visual Arts will be chosen for State Fair. (Plus one entry from Heritage Arts) All class exhibits will be static. When an exhibitor is selected for State Fair, the Exhibitor will receive a special sheet to fill out and return to the fair 4-H Office. Exhibitors selected for State Fair Delegate or Alternate, may participate in the Parade of Excellence on Sunday.
