4-H IS CALLING FOR YOUR ATTENTION AND ASSISTANCE!
4-H IS LOOKING FOR MORE VOLUNTEERS TO HELP REACH MORE YOUTH AND EXTEND BETTER SERVICE TO OUR AUDIENCE. IF YOU KNOW OF ANYONE INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING PLEASE HAVE THEM CALL THE EXTENSION OFFICE FOR MORE INFORMATION 847-223-8627.
Volunteers Needed in 4-H
Volunteers are the backbone of the 4-H program. They are the organizers, teachers, and counselors who make the program available to youth. Utilizing volunteers effectively can assure the success of the local program. Positive youth development research shows the importance of caring adults in the lives of young people. Contact your local Extension office for details about the following volunteer opportunities or access the information on the county Extension web page.
Club/Group Volunteers
The formal roles volunteers fill at the local level fall into three general categories: organizational leaders, project leaders, and activity leaders. Organizational leaders provide overall leadership to club or group organization, overseeing the structure and operation, and serving as the club/group's contact with Extension staff and county/unit volunteers. They involve and coordinate activities of other volunteers who support the club/group. Project and activity leaders help members plan and conduct projects and group activities.
Volunteers can help with tasks that take place throughout the year and with tasks that can be completed in a short time period. There are volunteer roles working directly with 4-H members and others that support the club behind the scenes. The most successful clubs/groups encourage each member's family to take on volunteer roles, each contributing what it can.
County Volunteers
At the county level, the 4-H program also needs volunteers to give guidance to policy and priority setting in administrative roles, to conduct or assist with county-level events, and to provide leadership to program expansion and promotion.
To all of the clubs who participated in the 2009 Window Display Judging:

- LAKE COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS FOR ALLOWING US TO HOLD THIS EVENT
- 4-H LEADERS, MEMBERS, PARENTS AND VOLUNTEERS FOR MAKING LAKE COUNTY 4-H A GROWING SUCCESS!
*******CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF THE 2009 RECOGNITION OF EXCELLENCE AWARDEES!
Your assistance requested
______________________CALLING ALL LEADERS, MEMBERS AND PARENTS
Your assistance is NEEDED in setting up more "committees" for each of the "umbrella categories" listed below!
(It is asked that Leaders, members and interested parents sign up for at least ONE committee in their area of expertise and /or interest).
Each of the committees would be made up of youth, adult, volunteers and interested parents. A chair of each committee would be selected to be the liaison between the committee and the 4-H Extension Staff. These committees would be responsible for writing their area of the 4-H Lake County Fair book, incorporating as many of the state fair guidelines as needed. This would be written in a language the average "NEW" 4-H leader or family could easily understand. These committees would also help obtain superintendents and judges for their respective areas. (Listed areas from project listed below)
***The goal is to continue our 4-H Mission (To help youth learn skills for living), as we also continue to enhance leaders, members and new 4-H families!
The Extension Staff stands by the saying ―"To Make the Best Better!" -- As the 4-H Creed States:
- HEAD for the power it will give me to think, plan and reason
- HEART for the nobleness it will give me to be kind, sympathetic and true
- HANDS for the ability it will give me to be helpful skillful, and useful
- HEALTH for the strength it will give me to enjoy life, resist disease and work efficiently
If you are looking to share your creative ideas and help to expand 4-H, then you are looking in the right place. 4-H is looking for youth and parents to come aboard to become a part of the following planning committees. CHAIN O' LAKES 4-H CLUB NOTES
The Chain O' Lakes 4-H Club has been busy enrolling new members for the current year. We are getting the members signed up for horse judging, horse bowl and hippology. The club also held two 4-H family events in October. On October 11, there was a huge turnout for the family trail ride at Chain O' Lakes State Park with a picnic afterwards. On October 17 a small group went to the Richardson Corn Maze for some Halloween fun.
At the October 4-H meeting, the members had the opportunity to have Mark Spreyer from the Stillman Nature Center, South Barrington, IL do a presentation on raptor birds. Mr. Spreyer gave us many interesting facts on the Great Horned Owl and the Screech Owl as far as identifying them, their habitat, diet, voice and nesting requirements. It was a great program enjoyed by more than fifty people.
The club has two committees working separately on community service projects. One is a towel/washcloth collection for PADS (Homeless) and the other the Holiday Neediest Family collection.

4-H STORIES
NAE4HA is working on a '4-H Stories' project. They would like to create a '4-H Stories' book much like the 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' books. They would like to have stories from every state and at this time do not have any stories from Illinois. Dan Tabler, former Maryland Extension staff member is serving as the Editor. The stories may come from staff, volunteers, or members. The stories should be at least three pages double-spaced. Please consider promoting this project through your newsletter, leader meetings, or other events/activities. For more information or to submit stories, contact Dan Tabler at dtabler@umd.edu.
