Welcome to our Spring/Summer 2007 edition of Extension line. Please join me in welcoming, Deidra Cody, Academic Hourly, Nutrition and Wellness to Kendall County. A note of introduction and upcoming nutrition and wellness programs are included in this newsletter.
The University of Illinois Extension Kendall County Council is currently accepting applications for new council members. The local Extension council provides a way for citizens to participate in planning, delivering, and evaluating Extension educational programs. Council members advise Extension staff on views, opinions, needs and concerns of local community members.

Kendall County Pork Producers Donates to Extension
A great big thank you goes to the Kendall County Pork Producers for their generous donation to the University of Illinois Extension Kendall County. In the current fiscal year they donated $2525, and for the fiscal year beginning on July 1, they have donated $2000. All general donations are matched at almost 100%. The Extension Council and staff also appreciated Pork Producers support for the preparing and grilling the Pork Chops for the Annual Friends of Extension Pork Chop Dinner.

April 19: Vitamin B12 and Folate: Neurological Disease and Aging presented by Karen Chapman-Novakofski. Participants will learn what the requirements for vitamin B12 and folate are in older persons.
May 17: the Mediterranean Dist-A Second Look presented by Robert J. Reber. Participants will: become familiar with the wide-ranging areas of research interest currently surrounding Mediterranean diets.

The fee is $20/person or $30/couple. Each session includes information on managing diabetes and taste testing of foods. Learn how to select foods appropriate for diabetes when eating out or shopping for food and how to put your diabetes meal plan into action.

Welcome, Deidra Cody
Please help us welcome Deidra Cody, Academic Hourly/Nutrition and Wellness to Kendall County. Deidra completed a Bachelor's Degree at Berea College in Kentucky in Child and Family Studies, Nutrition/Dietetics emphasis. She hopes to complete a Master of Science Degree in Nutrition Science at Northern Illinois University in December 2007. Deidra recently received her Registered Dietitian credentials.
Deidra will be assisting with both youth and adult programming in the area of nutrition and wellness. She is available to answer clientele questions that focus on food and nutrition. Deidra's position is part-time hourly and is contingent upon the availability of funds.
A Special Thank-You to: Kendall Beef Association
In the current fiscal year the Kendall Beef Association donated $2000 for 4-H/ Youth Development programs in Kendall County. The monies were matched at almost 100%. What a great gift to our youth program! The monies received this past year were used to provide half of each 4-H'ers insurance costs; a portion of the cost of ribbons for the 4-H Fair; new incubators, supplies and educational materials for the Embryology Curriculum used in the schools and by some of our 4-H clubs; and other educational curriculums and resources used by 4-H members and school youth. Please take time to thank members of the Kendall Beef Association for their generous donation to support 4-H in Kendall County.
Camp Clover Set for June
Camp Clover is an exciting, hands-on learning summer camp for youth ages 8 to 12 going into 3rd, 4th or 5th Grades. It is open to 4-H members and non-4-H'ers. Youth will learn more about our community & world, conduct experiments and experience food and nutrition – by eating the snacks they make.
Camp Clover is scheduled for 3 weeks in June in Kendall County. The three locations consist of Plano Centennial School from June 11th -14th, Fox Township Hall in Millbrook from June 18th - 21st, and a location in Oswego (TBA) from June 25th -28th.
Camp runs for 3 hours in the morning for 4 consecutive days (Mon-Thurs. 8:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. and only costs $5 for the week. Sessions of Social Science, Food Nutrition and Wellness, and Hands on Science will be presented. Pre-registration is required. Agronomy Dates Being Slated
Three crops management workshops are being planned for the Northern Illinois Agronomy Research Center near Shabbona for the 2007 growing season. There are still several items to coordinate before the final dates and programs can be announced, but an early June program will focus on crop diseases. Insect pests will be the main order of business for the late June session. The final session in early August will review weeds and herbicides. All of the programs are subject to modification if crop conditions warrant changes. Watch for specific program details in early May. CCA credits will be available for all sessions.
Agronomy Day, Aug. 16th
Agronomy Day 2007 is scheduled for August 16, 2007 at the South Farm in Urbana. Mark you calendars.
